E. STROUDSBURG DEFEATS CLARION 31-21

IN INAUGURAL NIGHT GAME AT MEMORIAL STADIUM

CLARION, PA: Clarion kicked off its 2003 season with new Sprinturf and lights in the inaugural night game at Memorial Stadium, but East Stroudsburg came away with a 31-21 victory on Saturday night.

East Stroudsburg freshman qb Jim Terwilliger passed for 188 yards and three td's and ran for 46 yards to lead the Warriors who are now 2-0 on the season. Clarion dropped to 0-1.

ESU's Mark Brubaker opened the scoring with a 26-yard field goal with 7:50 left n the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Clarion's Brandon Sweeney electrified the crowd of 5,017 with an 8-2 yard kickoff return for Clarion's first score. The Eagles missed the PAT and Clarion led 6-3.

ESU qb Jim Terwilliger fired two, second quarter td passes to give the Warriors a 17-6 halftime lead. His first was a 14-yard strike on a post-pattern to Anthony Carfagno, and the second came with 3:34 left before intermission on a 20 pass to John Jeffries.

ESU went 97-yards in only two plays to score in the third quarter on a 14-yard pass from Terwilliger to Jeffries giving the Warriors a 24-6 lead. The td pass followed an 83-yard Carfagno run after the Golden Eagles had pinned ESU at their own 3-yard line with a 32-yard punt from Kyle Snoke.

Clarion bounced back with a 68-yard drive in 8 plays and scored when freshman qb Felton Woulard rolled right and then decided to dash 8-yards into the endzone for the score. Woulard then hooked up with Ed Rivers for the two-point conversion and Clarion trailed 24-14 with 7:13 left in the third.

Clarion drove to the ESU 25 late in the third and then saw placekicker Mark Hoffmeister's 42-yard field goal attempt drift wide right keeping the score 24-14.

The Warriors put the game out of reach in the fourth when ESU drove 74-yards in 7 plays and scored on a 40-yard reverse to John Jeffries with 9:38 remaining.

Clarion's defense caused an ESU turnover when Emil Johnson sacked Terwilliger and Troy Bowers recovered the ball at the Warrior 16. On second down at the ESU 13, Woulard scrambled and ran the ball 12 yards to the 1, where Brandon Sweeney finished the drive with a 1-yard plunge. Hoffmeister's PAT at 4:34 proved to be the final score of 31-21.

Clarion rushed for 241 yards and passed for 43 for 284 yards of total offense. QB Frantz Charles ran for 84 yards on 22 tries, while Jason Warner gained 69 on 13 carries and Felton Woulard had 48 yards and 1 td on 10 carries. Woulard also completed 5 of 8 passes for 43 yards.

Clarion's "D" was led by Jabari Weatherspoon's 9 tackles and 1 tfl, while Bo Busch had 7 stops and 1 fumble caused and Trou Bowers 5 hits and 1 sack.

East Stroudsburg rushed for 209 yards and passed for 188 for a total of 397 yards of offense. Anthony Carfagno rushed for 99 yards on 7 carries and caught 1 pass for 14 yards and 1 td. John Jeffries grabbed 5 aerials for 118 yards and 2 td's, while also running for 40 yards and 1 score.

ESU's "D" was led by Phil Dececco who had 14 tackles, 3 tfl's and 1 sack, and Ryan Wermillion who notched 12 stops and 2 tfl's.

Clarion returns to action next Saturday and hosts Millersville at 6pm. East Stroudsburg is off next week.
