SHIPPENSBURG – The Clarion University women's soccer team suffered a gut-wrenching 1-0 loss at Shippensburg Tuesday afternoon when the Lady Raiders scored in the final 40 seconds of regulation to take the victory.
“It was a tough one,” Clarion's first-year head coach Rob Eaton said. “It took a phenomenal shot to beat us. It was a great shot from 18 yards out. There was nothing anyone could have done about it. We were getting ready for overtime, and boom it went in. We played wells. It's disappointing.”
The goal came from Shippensburg's Katie Klinger at the 89th minute off a failed clearing attempt of a Lady Raider corner kick, Shippensburg's 13th corner kick of the game vs. none for Clarion (4-4-3 PSAC, 4-6-4 overall).
Earlier in the half, Clarion has a chance to break a scoreless tie but
Jill Miller's header hit off the crossbar.
Overall, the Golden Eagles had 14 shots to Shippensburg's 16, but Clarion had nine shots on goal to just five from the Lady Raiders.
Despite the loss, Clarion remains just a point behind Edinboro for the eighth and final PSAC playoff spot. The Golden Eagles have 15 points while Edinboro has 16. Each team has three matches left including Edinboro traveling to Clarion for a 3 p.m. match Oct. 30.
The Golden Eagles return to action Saturday when they host California at 7 p.m.
