(Clarion, Pa.): Clarion's Craig Bunney and Matt Ward caught td passes from qb Ben Fiscus on Saturday but it wasn't enough, as Edinboro defeated Clarion 31-14 in a key PSAC-Western Division matchup.
Held at Clarion's Memorial Stadium, the Golden Eagles fell to 2-6 on the season and 2-3 in the PSAC-West, while Edinboro upped their record to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the PSAC-West.
Edinboro jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Drew Harrel capped an 11-play, 83-yard drive with a 3-yard td run at 4:01 of the first quarter.
Edinboro's special teams posted the second score late in the second quarter to give the Scots a 14-0 lead. With Clarion's Robert Mamula punting from his own endzone, Edinboro's Mike Hanhauser broke through the line and blocked the kick, then recovered the ball in the endzone for the touchdown. Alex Romanias PAT at 2:21 gave Edinboro a 14-0 lead with 2:10 left before halftime.
Clarion cut the lead to 14-7 on the final play of the first half. Eagle freshman qb Ben Fiscus went back to pass, rolled left, and found received Craig Bunney behind the Scot defense at the 5-yard and Bunney went in for the Clarion td. Mamula booted the PAT and with no time left on the clock, Edinboro's lead was only 14-7.
Edinboro qb Cody Harris put the Scots up 21-7 early in the third on a 53-yard td pass to Gary Nolen.
The Scots upped their lead to 31-7 on a Romanias 23-yard field goal at 12:30 of the fourth, along with a Herrell 1-yard run at 2:21 of the fourth.
Clarion drove 71-yards in 10 plays for the Eagles final score. The td came on a 13-yard pass from Fiscus to Matt Ward with 15-seconds left in the game to make the final 31-14.
Clarion had 276 yards of offense in the game including 101 rushing yards and 175 passing yards.
Fiscus rushed 19 times for 70 yards and completed 14 of 38 passes for 175 yards and 2 td's. Hoggard rushed only 10 times for 31 yards.
Matt Ward caught 5 passes for 63 yards and 1 td and Craig Bunney had 3 catches for 70 yards and 1 td.
Nick Sipes led the Clarion “D” with 10 tackles.
Edinboro's Herrell rushed 19 times for 95 yards and 2 td's, while Harris completed 19 od 23 passes for 232 yards and 1 td. David Bostic caught 8 passes for 80 yards.
Clarion travels to Gannon next Saturday for a 1pm game.
