SLIPPERY ROCK – The Clarion University men's and women's basketball teams open PSAC-West play Wednesday at Slippery Rock with the women's game slated for 6 p.m. and the men's game at 8 p.m.
CLARION MEN OFF TO 9-2 START
The Golden Eagles men's team enters PSAC-West play with the best overall record in the PSAC-West at 9-2. Clarion won nine in a row to start the season before losing a pair of close games over the weekend dropping a 69-63 decision at Shippensburg Saturday and then losing on a buzzer-beating tip-in 75-74 at Cheyney Sunday.
Despite those two losses, Clarion is still off to its best star since going 10-2 in 2004, and the 9-0 start was the fifth-best in school history.
Jamar Harrison is the leading scorer for the Golden Eagles at 19.5 points per game while adding 6.8 rebounds per contest. He has scored in double figures in 26 straight games dating back to last January.
Lloyd Harrison, the point guard, is adding 16.5 points, 6.4 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.5 steals per contest. He is the leading assist giver in the PSAC.
Also on the outside, senior sharpshooter
Mike Sherry is chipping in 9.4 ppg and has hit 27 three-pointers on the season. Sherry is one three-pointer away from becoming the fourth player in school history with 200 in a career.
Inside, Clarion looks to junior forwards
Paul McQueen and Bud Teer. McQueen is averaging 13 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, while Teer adds 10.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per contest and has four double-doubles on the year.
Slippery Rock, meanwhile, enters the game at 10-4. The Rock is coming off a 72-65 win at home over Mansfield Sunday.
Senior forward Maron Brown, who was the PSAC-West Player of the Week this past week after averaging 20 points and 11.5 rebounds in a pair of wins, leads Slippery Rock. Brown is averaging 16.7 points and 11.1 rebounds on the year.
Jabril Baily (16.0 ppg, 7.1 rpg) and Devin Taylor (14.1 ppg, 7.2 rpg) also play key roles for The Rock.
GOLDEN EAGLE WOMEN HAVE WON TWO OF FOUR
Clarion's women's team enters PSAC-West play at 3-9, but the Golden Eagles, who start four freshmen, have played better as of late and have won two of their last four games including a 65-43 win at Cheyney Sunday.
Guard
Emma Fickel was named the PSAC-West Freshman of the Week after scoring 24 points and grabbing eight rebounds in the win over Cheyney. The 24 points were a season high and the eight rebounds tied her season best. She also hit a season-high six three-pointers in the game tying for the fifth most threes in a game by a Golden Eagle freshman. On the year, Fickel is averaging 13.8 points per game and has hit 39 three-pointers, which are already the most for a Clarion freshman since Allison Stodart hit 57 in 2000.
Three additional freshmen join Fickel in the starting lineup including point guard
Raven Jones (8.8 ppg, 3.3 apg, 3.9 rpg), shooting guard
Mackenzie Clark (7.9 ppg, 3.3 rpg) and forward
Ann Deibert (7.9 ppg, 5.8 rpg) while fellow freshman
Lauren Savulchak (7.5 ppg, 6.3rpg) is a key contributor off the bench.
Junior forward
Courtney Healy is the lone upperclassmen in the starting five and averages 7.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per contest.
Slippery Rock enters the game at 2-10 and is coming off its second win of the season, a 59-43 victory at home over Mansfield Sunday.
The Rock is led Danielle Smith's 12.6 points, 7.3 rebounds per game, while Shannon Lee is adding 10 points per contest and Alex Beatty 9.5 points per game.
Both Clarion teams return to action Saturday when they host Edinboro in the PSAC-West home opener. The women's game is slated for 1 p.m. followed by the men's game at 3 p.m.
