CLARION – Thanks to 17 points and 17 rebounds from Bud Teer, Clarion held off a late Edinboro charge to beat the Fighting Scots 69-59 in PSAC-West men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Tippin Gym.
Teer's biggest points were the four he scored in the final 2:22 of the game after Edinboro had cut a 10-point Clarion lead, 57-47, with 4:54 to play to two points, 59-57, with 2:26 left. But Teer made it a two-possession game with a layup at the 2:22 mark and then hit two crucial free throws with 48 seconds left and Clarion up four, 63-59.
The layup by Teer with 2:22 to play started a game-ending 10-2 run for Clarion (10-3 overall, 1-1 PSAC-West) with all 10 points coming after all-conference point guard
Lloyd Harrison had fouled out of the game with 3:12 to play.
But Teer's layup and two
Paul McQueen free throws returned the lead to six, 63-57, with 1:40 to play.
Edinboro (8-8, 0-2) got back within four on a Bobby Stauffer layup with 50 seconds to play, but Teer's two free throws started a stretch where Clarion hit 6 of 7 charity shots in the final 48 seconds to seal the win.
Jamar Harrison added 16 points and five rebounds and recorded his 28
th straight double-digit game, while
Mike Sherry added 10 points, freshman
Mike Kromka nine points and 12 rebounds, which tied his season high, and McQueen six points and eight boards.
Lloyd Harrison, despite the foul trouble, ended with nine points, five rebounds, four assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
Anthony Lytle had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Edinboro, while Danny Walsh chipped in 13 points.
Neither team shot the ball great with Edinboro hitting 32.8 percent (21 of 64) for the game including 4 of 23 (17.4 percent) from 3-point range. Clarion was a season-low 37 percent from the floor (20 of 54) but did heat up some in the second half shooting 42.9 percent after making just 8 of 26 shots (30.8 percent) in the first half.
The Golden Eagles used a 14-5 run over the final 4:35 of the first half to erase a deficit that at one point reached nine points in the opening 20 minutes to take a 30-29 halftime lead.
Clarion returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mercyhurst.
NOTES – The double-double was Teer's third straight double-double and his sixth of the season with all six coming in his past nine games … Clarion has now won 10 straight home games … Sherry was 4 of 4 from the free-throw line and has now hit 25 straight charity shots dating back to last season … Sherry's two three-pointers give him 202 for his career and he now has 938 career points … Teer's 17 rebounds were tied for the 13
th most in a game since 1981 and are the most in a PSAC-West game for a Golden Eagle since
Shameel Carty's 19 vs. Lock Haven last season. They are also tied for the fourth-most in a PSAC-West game for a Golden Eagle since 1981.
