CLARION – For nearly a 15-minute span in the first half Wednesday night, the Clarion University men's basketball team could do nothing wrong.
The Golden Eagles went on a 42-0 run in the half and held Lock Haven without a basket for 14:48 on its way to a record-setting 111-38 win over the visiting Bald Eagles at Tippin Gym.
Clarion (12-4 overall, 3-2 PSAC-West) led 57-11 at halftime and then outscored Lock Haven (1-15, 0-5) 54-27 in the second half to get its largest PSAC-West win ever at 73 points which also tied for the third-largest margin of victory in school history. Meanwhile, the 111 points are tied for the fourth-most in a PSAC-West game by Clarion and the third most in a regulation game. It is the first time Clarion has scored 111 points against a PSAC-West opponent since losing 118-111 in double overtime to California Feb. 2, 1994, and it is the most points in a conference in a win for the Golden Eagles since beating Slippery Rock 113-80 Feb. 17, 1979, also at Tippin Gym.
Defensively, the 38 points allowed are the fourth fewest allowed in the shot-clock era by Clarion and the fewest against a PSAC-West opponent. The last time Clarion allowed less than 38 points in a conference game was Feb. 8, 1984, when it beat IUP 43-37 at IUP.
Twelve of the 13 players who played for Clarion scored led by 19 points from
Jamar Harrison, who was 9 of 10 from the field including 9 of 9 inside the arc. He added two steals while helping Clarion get 20 swipes – Lock Haven had 24 turnovers.
Jamar Harrison was one of five Golden Eagles in double digits. Bud Teer added his eighth double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds,
Mike Sherry chipped in with 14 points giving him 987 in his career,
Lloyd Harrison had 10 points, six assists and two steals and
Mike Nealis had a season-high 11 points while grabbing a career-high seven rebounds off the bench.
Mike Kromka added nine points and seven rebounds off the pine helping Clarion's bench outscore Lock Haven's 44-22.
Paul McQueen chipped in six points and five rebounds.
David Blackwell led Lock Haven with 17 points off the bench, while Jeff Everett had nine points.
Clarion shot 54.1 percent for the game including 58.3 percent (21 of 36) in the first half. Lock Haven shot 29.4 percent for the contest including 16 percent (4 of 25) in the opening 20 minutes.
The Golden Eagles also controlled the glass outrebounding Lock Haven 52-24 including 19-6 on the offensive glass. Clarion had 29 second-chance points outscoring Lock Haven 29-2 in that department and also added 46 points off turnovers outscoring the Bald Eagles 46-0 off turnovers. Clarion's inside presence was also felt with the Golden Eagles topping Lock Haven 62-12 in points in the paint.
The Golden Eagles led 11-9 just under four minutes into the game before going on the large run that pushed the lead to 53-9 with 1:50 left in the first half.
Clarion returns to action at 3 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Gannon.
