CLARION – Senior point guard
Lloyd Harrison scored a career-high 29 points while hitting a career-best six three-pointers to lead the Clarion University men's basketball team to an 85-76 win over visiting Millersville in PSAC Crossover action Tuesday night at Tippin Gym.
Harrison, who added six rebounds, four assists and two steals, was 9 of 18 from the field including 6 of 10 from behind the arc while going a perfect 5 of 5 from the free-throw line.
Behind
Lloyd Harrison, Clarion shot a school-record 70.6 percent (12 of 17) from three-point range and ran its win streak to nine games, the fifth-best start in school history. Clarion has also won nine straight home games, which is tied for the fifth most in the
Ron Righter-era.
Jamar Harrison, coming off back-to-back career-high games in points and rebounds, added his third straight 20-point performance scoring 20 points to go with six rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
Jamar Harrison was especially key down the stretch when he bucketed nine tallies in the game's final 6:44 after Millersville had cut a 15-point second-half deficit to six, 68-62, on a Mike Seibert three with seven minutes to play.
Jamar Harrison, though, started an 11-5 run with a pair of free throws t the 6:44 mark, and
Lloyd Harrison followed with a three-pointer to get the lead back to 10, 73-63, with 6:09 left. Two
Lloyd Harrison free throws were then followed by a
Jamar Harrison layup that put Clarion ahead 79-67 with 2:47 to play, and Millersville wasn't able to get closer than seven the rest of the way.
The game was tight for most of the first half before Clarion used an 18-6 run that was started by back-to-back
Mike Sherry three-pointers and immediately followed by a
Lloyd Harrison three. Dunks by
Jamar Harrison and Bud Teer and a
Paul McQueen three helped Clarion go ahead 43-31 with 1:59 left in the half before Millersville cut the deficit to 43-37 with 24 seconds left in the first half.
That is when
Lloyd Harrison pulled up with a jumper just outside the key and was fouled with three seconds to go. His free throws gave the Golden Eagles a 46-37 lead at halftime, and Millersville head coach Fred Thompson was called for a technical foul at the end of the half.
Mike Sherry then hit the two free throws at the start of the second half, and
Lloyd Harrison followed with a pair of threes to get the lead to 54-39 less than a minute into the half.
Clarion still led by 15, 60-45, following a Teer layup with 14:54 to go and were up 14, 66-52, thanks to a McQueen three with 10:08 to play.
But Millersville went on a 10-2 run thanks to threes by Mike Holley and Seibert to get within six at the seven-minute mark.
Sherry added 11 points for Clarion while hitting three three-pointers, and Teer had 10 points and eight rebounds. McQueen chipped in with nine points, five rebounds and six assists giving the forward 14 assists in his last two games.
Demond Vance and Elijah Obade led Millersville with 17 points each with Obade adding nine rebounds. Bernard Brown had nine points and eight rebounds with Holley chipping in nine points nad Jim Kelleher eight.
Clarion returns to action at 3 p.m. Saturday at Shippensburg.
NOTES – Millersville outrebounded Clarion 35-32, the first time this season the Golden Eagles have been outrebounded … Clarion shot 51.9 percent (28 of 54) from the field, the third straight game Clarion has been over 50 percent shooting and the sixth time in nine games … The 12 made threes tie for the 33
