CLARION FALLS TO CHEYNEY AT THE HORN

CHEYNEY – Sharif Bray's offensive putback at the horn lifted Cheyney to a 75-74 win over visiting Clarion in PSAC men's crossover basketball action Sunday afternoon.
 
Clarion (9-2), which has lost two straight, took a 74-73 lead on two Lloyd Harrison free throws with 20 seconds left. But the Golden Eagles couldn't grab a rebound at the end, as the third Cheyney shot in the final moments went home to give the Wolves (10-2) the win in a game that they led for a grand total of 5:02.
 
The two offensive boards in the final moments were two of just five offensive rebounds for Cheyney, as Clarion outrebounded the Wolves 36-21.
 
The Golden Eagles held the lead from the opening moments of the game until Cheyney grabbed its first lead of the contest, 53-52, with 14:13 left to play. From that point forward the lead changed hands 12 times and the game was tied on three other occasions.
 
Cheyney was up 73-72 following a Bray basket with 30 seconds to play before Lloyd Harrison hit the two free throws 10 seconds later. Bray then missed a shot near the end, but David Burton grabbed the rebound. Burton then missed a shot, and Bray tipped home the rebound for the win.
 
Coming off its first loss of the season Saturday at Shippensburg, Clarion got out of the blocks fast grabbing a 16-6 lead six minutes into the contest. The Golden Eagles then got the lead to 13, 31-18, with 7:38 to play in the first half and still led by nine, 40-31, with 2:37 to play in the half. But Cheyney ended the half on a 9-3 run and the game was on from there with Clarion leading by no more than five and Cheyney by no more than four the rest of the way.
 
Bud Teer led Clarion with 17 points and 13 rebounds with Paul McQueen adding 16 points and eight boards. Jamar Harrison chipped in with 11 points and Lloyd Harrison had eight points, five rebounds and five assists despite playing just 21 minutes because of foul trouble – he picked up two fouls in the game's first five minutes.
 
Bray led Cheyney with 23 points, Burton had 19 points and 11 rebounds and Amarildo Matos 15 points.
 
Clarion returns to action at 8 p.m. Wednesday when it travels to Slippery Rock for the PSAC-West opener. The Golden Eagles return home at 3 p.m. Saturday vs. Edinboro.
 
NOTES – Clarion shot 52.1 percent from the field (25 of 48) and 20 of 25 (80 percent) from the free-throw line but hit just 4 of 13 three-pointers. Cheyney was 50 percent (28 of 56) from the field including 9 of 23 from beyond the arc but went just 10 of 17 from the line … Clarion is now 2-8 all-time at Cheyney.
