CLARION – Clarion's
Paul McQueen scored a career-high 25 points, but the Golden Eagles couldn't overcome a lights-out shooting performance by Holy Family losing to the Tigers 88-65 Tuesday night in the home opener for Clarion at Tippin Gym.
McQueen, a senior whose previous career best was 23 points vs. Penn College two years ago, scored 14 points in the first half and finished the game 11 of 18 from the field including 2 of 3 from three-point range.
But Holy Family (1-0) shot 61.8 percent (34 of 55) from the field including an incredible 63.2 percent (12 of 19) from three-point range.
Alberto Munoz tied McQueen for game-high honors with 25 points and hit all five of his three-point tries for the Tigers. He was one of four Holy Family players in double digits joining Khiry Hankins (19 points), Rashaad Sneed (14 points) and Rickie Crews (11 points0. Hankins was 5 of 10 from three-point range, and Munoz completed a double-double with 11 rebounds.
Clarion (1-2) had three players in double figures, as
Winfield Willis, the PSAC West Athlete of the Week this week, scored 14 including 12 in the second half and
Calvin Edwards added 11. Bud Teer led all rebounders with 13 for the Golden Eagles including eight on the offensive glass.
The Golden Eagles shot just 36.6 percent (26 of 71) for the game including 5 of 23 (21.7 percent) from beyond the arc.
Holy Family used a 29-7 run in the first half to build a 47-34 halftime lead and never allowed Clarion to get closer than 11 in the second half. The Golden Eagles had a chance to close within single digits about midway through the second half when it trailed 58-47 but a turnover followed by a Holy Family basket started a 7-0 Panther run that put the game away.
The loss kept Clarion head coach
Ron Righter from winning his 400
th career game. Righter is 399-274 in his 26
th season as a head boss including 375-250 in 24 years at Clarion.
Clarion returns to action at 5 p.m. Saturday at Kutztown.
NOTES – The loss was just the fifth in a home opener under Righter. Clarion is now 19-5 in home openers under him and 58-16 all-time (missing results from the 1938 season) … Willis, a freshman, has scored 61 points in the first three games of his Clarion career.
