Clarion University wrestling opens its 2011-12 home dual meet wrestling season on Monday, December 19, when the Golden Eagles welcome #24 Edinboro to Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium. Match time for the dual meet is set for 7pm.
 
Also on tap will be a high school wrestling dual meet between Redbank Valley and Sharon starting at 4pm.
 
            The match can be heard locally on WWCH-AM (1300) and on the internet on redzonemedia.com with Rich Herman calling the play by play and former Clarion head coach and National Wrestling Hall of Fame member Bob Bubb doing color analysis.
 
            “We're looking forward to starting our dual meet season and wrestling in front of our home crowd,” said Clarion's first year head coach Mat Dernlan. “This will be an exciting match that has some of the nation's best wrestlers coming to Tippin Gym. We hope to have a nice turnout for the season opener.”
 
             Clarion, under first year head coach Matt Dernlan, enters the dual with record of 0-2, having lost to #7 Illinois (34-13) and #8 Lehigh (27-12). The Golden Eagles feature four ranked wrestlers including #6 rated James Fleming at 157, #7 Bekzod Abdurakhmonov at 165, #18 Quintas McCorkle at heavyweight and #19 Alex Thomas at 197.
 
            Clarion's lineup will be: Trey Hicks (4-9, Jr. Amityville, N.Y.) or Victor Lipari (3-2, So. Canonsburg) at 125; Joe Waltko (9-6, Jr. Allison Park, North Allegheny) at 133; Tyler Bedelyon (7-7, So. Lewistown, Indian Valley) at 141; Cameron Moran (7-7, Sr. James City, Kane) at 149, #6 James Fleming (9-1, Jr. West Mifflin, West Mifflin) at 157, #7 Bekzod Abdurakhmonov (9-2, Sr. Tashkent, Uzbekistan) at 165, Ryan Darch (8-8, R-Fr.. Batavia, N.Y.) at 174, Steven Cressley (10-5, Jr. Punxsutawney) or Nick Milano (5-6, So. Erie) at 184, #19 Alex Thomas (14-7, Jr. Seaford, De., Sussex Tech) at 197 and #18 Quintas McCorkle (14-5, Sr. Alexandria, Va.) at heavyweight.
 
            The Fighting Scots, under 15th year head coach Tim Flynn, enter the dual with a deceiving 0-1 dual meet record having lost 22-15 to Kent State. The Scots are led by #3 ranked Chris Honeycutt at 197, #8 ranked A.J. Schopp at 133, #10 ranked David Habat at 149, #18 Mitchell Port at 141 and #17 rated Ernest James at heavyweight. Edinboro recently won the PSAC team title at Mercyhurst and had Honeycutt, Schopp, Habat, Port, James and Victor Avery (184) win individual titles.
 
            The Edinboro lineup will be Kory Mines (9-7, Fr. Maple Hts., Oh.) at 125; #8 A.J. Schopp (18-1, Fr. Tyrone) at 133; #18 Mitchell Port (12-4, Fr. Bellefonte) at 141, #10 Dave Habat (17-4, Fr. Cleveland, Oh.) at 149, Casey fuller (15-7, Fr. Hamlin) at 157; Ethan Saylor (7-6, So. Connellsville) at 165, Chris Hrunka (10-7, Sr. Washington, N.j.) at 174; Vic Avery (11-6, Fr. Foxboro, Mass.) at 184, #3 Chris Honeycutt (18-0, N. Ridgeville, Oh.) at 197 and #17 Ernest James (16-4, so. Medford, N.Y.) at 285.
 
            CLARION NOTES: Clarion won last year's match wrestled at Ft. LeBoeuf High School by a 25-21 margin … The win for Clarion was the first over Edinboro since winning 25-16 on Feb. 6, 1998 … (See the dual results below) … Clarion owns a 32-22 series advantage over Edinboro in their long history … Edinboro leads in head to head in EWL matches 17-6 … In head to head matches wrestled at PSAC's last Saturday here were those head to head  results --- Port defeated Bedelyon in the finals 12-4 at 141;  Habat defeated Moran 14-9 in the semi's at 149; Avery defeated Cressley 8-3 at 184; Honeycutt defeated Thomas 12-6 at 197.
