EDWARDS, KROMKA HAVE CAREER BESTS AS CLARION BEATS CENTRAL PENN

Box Score CLARION – Calvin Edwards and Mike Kromka each scored career highs to lead the Clarion University men's basketball team to a 103-70 win over visiting Central Penn Wednesday night at Tippin Gym.
 
The victory was the fifth straight for the Golden Eagles (6-3) and the 398th all-time for Clarion at Tippin Gym. It was Clarion's second straight win over Central Penn (6-7), which is coached by former Golden Eagle assistant Dave Baker.
 
Edwards, a junior transfer, scored 20 of his game-high 25 points in the first half when he connected on 7 of 9 shots from the floor including 5 of 6 from three-point range. Edwards added five assists, three steals and a rebound and shot 9 of 13 from the floor and 5 of 8 from beyond the arc. He scored 11 of his 25 points during a 28-3 first-half run that saw Clarion turn a three-point lead, 22-19, into a 28-point advantage, 50-22.
 
Kromka, a sophomore, had 14 first-half points on his way to a career-best 21 tallies. He shot 9 of 12 including his fifth career three-pointer while bettering his previous high of 16 scored Nov. 29 against Susquehanna. Kromka added five rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal. Eight of Kromka's first-half points came during the 28-3 run that featured a 17-0 stretch by the Golden Eagles.
 
Paul McQueen continued his solid play for Clarion with 18 points, four rebounds and two assists. He has scored in double figures in three straight games and eight of Clarion's nine this year.
 
Also reaching double digits for the Golden Eagles was Winfield Willis with 11 points and three assists. Last week's PSAC West Freshman of the Week scored nine of his points in the second half helping Clarion outscored Central Penn 47-38 in the half after taking a 56-32 halftime lead. Bud Teer chipped in eight points and 10 rebounds, and Leonard Patterson had seven points, a career-high seven assists, three rebounds and two steals.
 
Montez Lacy led Central Penn, which visits VMI Thursday, with 15 points. Lamar Drayton added 13 points and Andre Batte 12.
 
Clarion shot a season-high 60.3 percent (38 of 63) from the field including a sizzling 71 percent (22 of 31) in the first half.
 
The Golden Eagles host Shippensburg at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Cheyney at 4 p.m. Saturday in a pair of PSAC contests.
 
NOTES – Clarion's biggest lead of the game was 38 points, 92-54, with 5:48 to play … Freshman Jeremy Schmader from nearby North Clarion High School scored his first career points on a pair of free throws and finished with two points and a rebound. Fellow Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference alum Drew Vandermeer from Clarion High had two steals, a blocked shot and a rebound … Clarion is now 33-3 against non NCAA Division I/II schools in the past decade and has won 14 straight. The Golden Eagles have won 25 in a row at home over those teams … Wednesday night's game was the first of a school-record tying eight-game home stand. The only other time Clarion played eight in a row at home was in 2007. The home stretch lasts through a game with IUP Jan. 14. Clarion is 233-96, including 231-96 at Tippin, under 24th year head coach Ron Righter, who picked up win No. 404 in his career and No. 380 at Clarion Wednesday night.
