Box Score CLARION – A 32-12 run at the start of the second half helped the Clarion University men's basketball team capture its sixth straight victory with a 77-67 win over visiting Shippensburg Friday night at Tippin Gym.
The Golden Eagles (7-3 overall, 4-1 PSAC West) trailed by one, 32-31, at halftime before using the run, which lasted just over 11 minutes, to take control of the game. It was a well-balanced run for Clarion with freshman
Winfield Willis scoring 10 of his 14 points during the streak while Bud Teer added eight of his 16 during the run and
Calvin Edwards seven of his team-high 18.
Shippensburg (4-6, 2-3 PSAC East) tried to rally and did get within 10 points, 71-61, on a three-pointer by Jordan Stasyszyn with 2:33 to go, but Clarion hit 6 of 8 free throws in the final 1:44 to seal the win. Stasyszyn led the Raiders with a game-high 22 points including three three-pointers.
Paul McQueen (11 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists) and
Leonard Patterson (10 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists) gave Clarion five players in double figures, and
Mike Kromka just missed the mark scoring eight points and hauling down seven boards. Teer completed a double-double, his fourth of the season and 17
th of his career, with a game-high 11 rebounds. Edwards added a season-high seven assists and chipped in with three boards, and Willis had a season-best five helpers to go with four rebounds and a blocked shot.
Will Royal gave Shippensburg two players over 20 points with 21 points while adding six rebounds. He was 13 of 15 from the free-throw line. Dane Lauber had a team-high seven rebounds off the bench.
The victory was No. 399 all time for Clarion's men's basketball at Tippin Gym. The Golden Eagles, who go for victory No. 400 at the historic building at 4 p.m. Saturday when they host Cheyney, are 399-166 all time at Tippin, which opened for men's basketball with an 85-79 win over Walsh Dec. 4, 1968. Clarion has had 41 straight winning seasons at Tippin and is 3-1 in the building this year.
Shippensburg led by five, 28-23, after John Corrigan hit a trey with 4:55 left in the first half before Clarion ended the half on an 8-4 run that featured five points from Edwards. The Golden Eagles took a 31-30 lead with eight seconds left in the half when Patterson hit one of two free throws before a layup by Craig Van Scyoc at the horn gave the Raiders a 32-31 halftime lead. Shippensburg scored nearly a third of its first-half points from the line going 10 of 12 including 9 of 9 from Royal, while Clarion was 2 of 3 in the half from the charity stripe. The Golden Eagles had foul trouble in the half with both Teer and McQueen picking up two and Kromka three in the half. But none of those players fouled out of the game.
Clarion returns to action at 4 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Cheyney in a PSAC contest.
NOTES – Four of the six wins during the win streak have come in PSAC play … Clarion shot 50.9 percent from the field, the fourth straight game the Golden Eagles have been at 50 percent of better shooting. That stretch has helped Clarion shoot 49.3 percent for the season … The Golden Eagles outrebounded Shippensburg, which shot 40.4 percent, 37-30.
