CAL ENDS CLARION'S PLAYOFF HOPES WITH 89-77 WIN

CLARION – California outscored Clarion 57-40 in the second half to end the Golden Eagles PSAC Playoff hopes with an 89-77 win at Clarion Wednesday night.
 
With the victory, the Vulcans (14-11 overall, 7-6 PSAC-West) clinched the fourth and final PSAC Playoff berth awarded to the PSAC-West.
 
The game was a tale of two halves, as Clarion (15-10, 5-8) led by five at the break after leading by as many as 14 in the opening 20 minutes. The Golden Eagles shot 51.6 percent in the first half but just 36.1 percent in the second half.
 
Meanwhile, California was on fire in the second half shooting 61.5 percent (16 of 26) after a 36.7 percent first half.
 
Paul McQueen led four Clarion players in double figures with 19 points while adding seven rebounds. Mike Sherry, playing his final home game after a four-year career that saw him post over 1,000 career points, added 18 points while hitting four 3-poiners. Jamar Harrison ran his double-digit scoring streak to 40 straight games with 17 points and Lloyd Harrison added 16 points, five rebounds and three assists including 13 tallies in the first half.
 
Cal also had four players in double figures led by 18 points off the bench from Joe Berenato, who hit four triples himself. Steve Swiech added 17 points and six rebounds, Quentin Harding had 15 points off the bench and Rashawd Hatten added 13 points and nine rebounds. Freddy Appiah chipped in nine points, nine assists and four steals.
 
The Vulcans were 28 of 37 from the free-throw line including 20 of 25 in the second half. Clarion shot 12 of 16 from the line including 4 of 4 in the second 20 minutes.
 
Clarion closes its season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Gannon.
