(CLARION, PA.): Clarion won five of ten bouts against Bloomsburg tonight including a big upset win by 174-pounder
Scott Joseph, but it wasn't enough as the Huskies used extra bonus points to edge the Golden Eagles 19-15 in NCAA Division I Wrestling.
Held at W.S. Tippin Gym, Clarion's record dropped to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the EWL. Bloomsburg is now 12-5 overall land 1-3 in the EWL.
The match started at 141 and the Huskies got all the bonus points they needed when Derek Shingara pinned
Hunter McGraw at 2:11.
But in a match that saw five lead changes, the Golden Eagles of head coach Teague Moore fought back with four straight decisions.
Clarion got started at 149 when
Anthony White decisioned Matt Hicks 7-3. White had two, first period takedowns to pave the way as he raised his record to 18-9.
The Eagles #6 ranked
James Fleming won a hard-fought 4-2 decision over Frank Hickman at 157. Hickman posted a 2-0 lead late in the second with a takedown, but Fleming rode Hickman the entire third period, including a three-point nearfall with one minute to go that provided the winning margin. Riding time made it 4-2 and Fleming is now 22-2 this season.
Bekzod Abdurakhmonov made it three straight when he defeated Josh Veltre 11-5 at 165. Bekzod had three, first period takedowns to get the win, his 20
th against only six losses.
The match of the night for the Golden Eagles came at 174 where underdog
Scott Joseph upset PSAC champion Mike Dessino 5-4. Joseph had a second period takedown for a 3-2 lead after two. Joseph took down in the third, and after getting a point for Dessino's unsportsmanilike conduct, escaped with about 6 seconds remaining to lead 5-2. Joseph was penalized with one second left, and Dessino also had riding time, but Joseph gained a huge 5-4 win giving Clarion a 12-6 lead.
Bloomsburg's Nate Graham won an 8-0 major over
Steven Cressley at 184, and then the Huskies Richard Perry upset Clarion's
Alex Thomas at 197 2-1 in another exciting match. Perry's takedown late in the second gave him a 2-0 lead. Thomas took the top position in the third and rode Perry out. He nearly had back points on several occasions, but couldn't get the count he needed to produce victory.
Clarion's
Quintas McCorkle had the Eagle crowd on its feet, watching him win 3-2 in the second tied breaker. Tied 1-1 after regulation, both wrestlers escaped in the first tie breaker for a 2-2 tie. In the second tie breaker McCorkle escaped, then rode out Walsh for the 3-2 win.
With Clarion back on top 15-13, Bloomsburg won the final two bouts to edge the Golden Eagles 19-15.
Clarion will host rider at noon and Ohio University at 2pm on Sunday afternoon at Tippin Gym.
