Box Score
CLARION –
Mike Sherry (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley) scored his 1,000
th career point at Clarion, but it wasn't enough to thwart a large comeback by Slippery Rock in a 79-71 Golden Eagle loss to the visiting Rock Saturday night at Tippin Gym.
Sherry needed one point coming into the contest to get 1,000 and reached the milestone 15 seconds into the game on a long-range three-pointer. He finished the night with 10 points and 1,009 in his career.
But Slippery Rock (16-6 overall, 6-2 PSAC-West) used a 26-4 run in the second half to grab the win in a game that Clarion led by 19, 31-12, with 5:29 left in the first half.
The Golden Eagles (12-7, 3-5) still were up 11, 52-41, following two Sherry free throws with 14:20 to play but failed to score a basket in the next eight minutes and scored just four points on two free throws apiece by
Lloyd Harrison and
Jamar Harrison. That allowed Slippery Rock to turn the score around and take an 11-point lead, 67-56, with 6:10 left.
Clarion wasn't done, though, and answered with a 9-2 run of its own to get back within four, 69-65, with 4:15 left. And the Golden Eagles still trailed by just four, 73-69, with 41 seconds to play when
Lloyd Harrison was called for his fifth foul and then a pair of technical fouls leading to an ejection. Slippery Rock hit 5 of 8 free throws out of that sequence and the ensuing Clarion foul to go ahead 78-69 with 30 seconds left.
Lloyd Harrison will miss Clarion's game with the University of the District of Columbia Monday because of the ejection.
Before exiting,
Lloyd Harrison had a game-high 24 points for Clarion to go with five rebounds and four steals. He was 14 of 16 from the free-throw line.
Jamar Harrison added 17 points and eight rebounds, Bud Teer nine points and five boards and
Mike Kromka four points and 11 rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
Maron Brown led Slippery Rock with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Devin Taylor had 14 points and 12 rebounds, Jon Valeriano 14 points and seven assists and Jabril Bailey 14 points.
Clarion returns to action at 7 p.m. Monday when it hosts UDC in a non-conference game.
