TEER HAS MOST BOARDS AT CLARION SINCE 1977; LEADS EAGLES PAST UDC

Box Score

CLARION – Bud Teer's monster game led a short-handed Clarion University men's basketball team to an 86-80 win over visiting the University of the District of Columbia Monday night at Tippin Gym.

Teer scored a game-high 24 points and added a career-high 23 rebounds, the most known rebounds at Clarion since Terry Roseto had 23 at Penn St.-Behrend Feb. 19, 1977.

“Our main focus in practice the last couple of days has been rebounds,” Teer said. “That has been a big emphasis because it has hurt us the last couple of games. I didn't realize I had that many. The most I have ever had was 18 rebounds when I played at Rio Grande (the college Teer played at before transferring to Clarion this season).”

Clarion was playing without two starters, as forward Paul McQueen missed his third straight game with a lower-body injury and point guard Lloyd Harrison was serving an automatic one-game suspension for picking up two technical fouls and a game ejection Saturday vs. Slippery Rock.

“With Lloyd and Paul out, we knew the upperclassmen had to step up,” Teer, a junior, said. “This was a huge win for us after losing a couple of close games. It is a big momentum game heading into the final conference games.”

Senior guard Jamar Harrison added 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals, while senior Mike Sherry chipped in with 10 points and was 2 of 3 behind the three-point arc.

Backup point guard Leonard Patterson made his first start and contributed eight points, four rebounds and three assists, while freshman Mike Kromka had nine points, eight rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and a steal off the bench. Sophomore David Colbert also gave the Golden Eagles valuable minutes off the pine with a career-best nine points to go with a pair of rebounds.

Brandon Herbert led UDC with 22 points and four steals, while Nigel Munson added 19 points, seven assists and four rebounds. Brandon Ennis had 10 rebounds off the bench for the Firebirds.

Clarion led by 12, 43-31, at halftime and was still up 11, 62-51, with 11:31 to play before UDC made a late run and got within a point, 80-79, with 40 seconds to play. But Denzil Dennison's driving layup with 32 seconds to play gave the Golden Eagles a three-point lead, and Clarion then hit 4 of 4 free throws, two each from Teer and Jamar Harrison, to seal the victory.

The Golden Eagles return to action at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when they host Mercyhurst in a key PSAC-West clash. The Lakers are a perfect 8-0 in PSAC-West play with Clarion sitting at 3-5 but just a game out of a playoff spot.

NOTES – The school record for rebounds is 35 set by Gary Smith during the 1959-60 season … Twenty-three rebounds ties for the second most known total in school history with Roseto and Jack Derlink (vs. Cleveland St. Jan. 29, 1966) but there are a lot of gaps in the record book between 1960 and 1981. The 23 boards are the most by a Golden Eagles since 1981 … The double-double gives Teer 11 double-doubles in the season, and he is averaging a double-double with 12.7 ppg, 10.3 rpg … Jamar Harrison had now scored in double-digits in 35 straight games.
