Box Score LOCK HAVEN – The Clarion University men's basketball team survived a scare at winless Lock Haven Wednesday night holding off the Bald Eagles for a 68-65 win at Thomas Fieldhouse.
The Golden Eagles (12-5 overall, 8-3 PSAC West) trailed Lock Haven (0-14, 0-11), which has lost 33 in a row, by four, 45-41, midway through the second half before using a 13-2 run to change the tide of the game.
But Clarion never could completely put the Bald Eagles away even after taking a seven-point lead, 67-60, on two
Winfield Willis free throws with 29 seconds left and had to survive a potential game-tying three-pointer by Lock Haven's Lucas Mosca just before the final horn.
That's because Andre Rivers' layup with 22 seconds left was followed by a
Calvin Edwards turnover that was followed by Julian Bond getting fouled by
Paul McQueen while shooting a three-pointer with 11 seconds to play. Bond hit all three free throws to make it a 67-65 lead, and Willis missed the front end of a double bonus with 10 seconds to play before knocking in the second one to make it 68-65.
Lock Haven then got the ball to Mosca, who while being a 35.1 percent three-pointer shooter coming into the game was 0-for-6 from behind the arc when he took the final shot, which was contested by a couple of Clarion defenders. The shot rattled off the rim and fell to Edwards who covered it until time ran out.
Despite the late foul, McQueen had a very solid game for Clarion recording his second double-double in a row with 18 points and 11 rebounds on 6 of 10 shooting including a three-pointer. He also had three assists, a block and a steal. Willis added 17 points, four rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal and scored six of his points during the critical 13-2 run. Bud Teer added 12 points and four rebounds with Edwards chipping in nine points on three treys and adding four rebounds and three steals.
Rivers led Lock Haven with 20 points and seven rebounds. Terrell Johnson added 13 points but was 5 of 20 shooting, while Nate Walters had 10 points and nine rebounds and Bond 10 points.
Lock Haven became just the third team to outrebound Clarion this season outboarding the Golden Eagles 39-33 including 15 offensive rebounds. But Clarion, which is 7-3 this year in games decided by seven or fewer points, improved to 2-1 when being outrebounded.
Clarion returns to action at 3 p.m. Saturday at Gannon.
