Box Score ERIE – Freshman guard
Winfield Willis produced his sixth 20-point game of the season with a game-high 20 points, but it wasn't enough to keep Clarion from falling at Gannon, 81-63, Saturday afternoon at the Hammermill Center in Erie.
Willis became the seventh freshman at Clarion since 1970 to score 300 points in a season (304) and the first since Terrance Vaughns in 2003 (301) when he netted 20 against the Golden Knights. But Gannon (9-7 overall, 7-5 PSAC West) had four players score in double digits, including 20 from T.J. Wilson, who added nine rebounds.
Calvin Edwards added 16 points for Clarion (12-6, 8-4), but no other Golden Eagle had more than
Leonard Patterson's seven points.
Meanwhile, Darrell Blanton added 18 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Knights, who won for the 13
th straight time at home over Clarion. Brandon Belt and Adam Blazek each added 13 points with Blazek also grabbing eight rebounds, dishing out six assists and coming away with four steals.
Gannon jumped out to a 15-4 lead 5:30 into the game and never trailed, although Clarion was within six, 35-29, at halftime and within two, 35-33, with 17:36 to play. The Golden Eagles were still within four, 38-34, with 16 ½ minutes left before a 13-2 Gannon run over the next five minutes gave the Golden Knights control of the game.
Clarion returns home at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts California.
NOTES – Clarion shot 40 percent for the game compared to Gannon's 51.7 percent … The Golden Knights outrebounded Clarion 41-30, the second straight game Clarion has been outrebounded but just the fourth time this season that has happened … The game marked the first time in six games a Clarion game was decided by more than seven points … Clarion hasn't won at Gannon since a an 83-80 victory Dec. 30, 1981.
