Paul McQueen had 21 points for Clarion

Box Score CLARION – An unusually cold shooting night, especially from three-point range, was too much for Clarion to overcome, as visiting California outscored the Golden Eagles 44-29 in the second half to win their sixth straight game at Tippin Gym, 76-63, Wednesday night.

Clarion (12-7 overall, 8-5 PSAC West) shot 39.3 percent (22 of 56) from the field, its second-worst shooting performance of the season, including 22.7 percent (5 of 22) from three-point range. The Golden Eagles were especially cold in the second half hitting 10 of 28 shots (35.7 percent) and 1 of 12 three-pointers.

California (11-8, 8-5), meanwhile, shot 15 of 30 in the second half and used runs of 17-2 and 9-0 to erase a 34-32 halftime deficit.

Paul McQueen led Clarion with 21 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks leaving him three rebounds shy of 600 in his career. He also needs 27 points for 1,000 career tallies. Calvin Edwards added 12 points and four rebounds and Winfield Willis, Mike Kromka and Teer each had six points. Kromka added seven rebounds.

Cal had six players score in double digits led by 13 points each from Steve Swiech, who added six rebounds and two blocks, and Chad Tipton. Tynell Fortune added 11 points and seven assists with Travon Vann, Quentin Harding and Jeremy Posey each scoring 10 points. Posey added five rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Clarion led by five, 46-41, before Cal's 17-2 run gave the Vulcans a 58-48 lead on a Harding layup with 8:51 to play. The Golden Eagles fought back and cut the lead to four, 63-59, thanks to six straight points by Teer before a Swiech layup started the 9-0 Cal run that put the lead back to 13, 72-59, on a Harding three with 2:12 to play.

The Golden Eagles return to action at 3 p.m. Saturday at Edinboro.
