CLARION WINS SECOND STRAIGHT AT EDINBORO FOR FIRST TIME SINCE LATE 70's

Winfield Willis

Box Score EDINBORO – For the first time since the disco was in vogue, the Clarion University men's basketball team can claim a winning streak at Edinboro's McComb Fieldhouse after securing its second straight road win against the Fighting Scots with an 86-79 victory Saturday afternoon.

It marks the first time the Golden Eagles (13-7 overall, 9-5 PSAC West) have won back-to-back games at Edinboro since the 1978 and1979 seasons.

On Saturday, balance was the key to the victory for Clarion, as five Golden Eagles reached double figures led by freshman Winfield Willis' 20 points, his sixth 20-point game of the year and his second in three contests. Senior Paul McQueen, meanwhile, recorded his fifth double-double of the year with 16 points and 10 rebounds while becoming the 11th known Clarion men's player to record 600 career boards (607). McQueen also closed within 11 points of 1,000 in his career.

Calvin Edwards and Bud Teer each chipped in with 16 points for Clarion with Teer adding eight boards and Edwards six, and Leonard Patterson had 11 tallies. Edwards also had six assists. Mike Kromka chipped in with eight points, six rebounds, three steals and tow assists.

The balance helped offset a 30-point contest by Edinboro's Jay Fletcher, the first Golden Eagle opponent to reach 30 points in over a year. Cory Somerville added 16 points for the Fighting Scots (9-9, 7-7) with Isaiah Prince adding 15 and Clint Nicholson 10.

Clarion trailed for just 15 seconds the entire game – 3-2 – and never after a McQueen jumper gave the Golden Eagles a 4-3 lead 57 seconds into the contest. The McQueen basket started an 18-6 run that put Clarion up by double digits midway through the first half. That helped the Golden Eagles lead 44-36 at halftime.

Edinboro got within five points on five different occasions in the second half, but Clarion never let the Fighting Scots get closer. A 10-4 run near the midpoint of the half helped the Golden Eagles go ahead by 11, 59-48, with 12:37 to play, their biggest lead of the half, before Edinboro clawed back within five, 80-75, with 53 seconds to play.

But Clarion hit six straight free throws in the final 46.8 seconds to seal the victory.

Clarion returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts Slippery Rock. It is Hawaiian Night at Tippin Gym with all fans encouraged to wear family-friendly appropriate tropical attire.

NOTES – The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Clarion, which hasn't lost more than two in a row all season … With the 20 points, Willis moved into fourth place in freshman scoring at Clarion since 1970 with 330 tallies. He passed Clarion Hall of Famer Reggie Wells, Sr., a 2,000-point career scorer, for fifth and Oronn Brown for fourth.. Wells had 317 points in 1976 and Brown had 327 in 1994 … It marked the 11th time this season a Golden Eagle game has been decided by seven or fewer points. Clarion is now 8-3 in those games … Edinboro played without leading scorer Ryan Theriot, who missed the game with an injury.
