“We came out a little flat in the first set,” Clarion head coach
Jennifer Mills said. “I told the girls to stay positive and take the set one point at a time.”
In the second set, Clarion gained control early and took a 24-16 lead. Millersville (7-12 overall, 1-8 PSAC East) went on to win the next 10 points closing out the set 26-24.
“I made a lot of changes throughout the set and was trying to get different looks,” said Mills. “Unfortunately we were unable to close out the set. No matter who is in the game, we need to stay consistent and close out the set.”
The Golden Eagles opened the third set on a 13-3 run which ultimately gave them the set win 25-13.
In the fourth Set, Millersville opened on a 9-3 run. At 13-10 after a long rally, Clarion was able to win a point which seemed to give the Golden Eagles all of the momentum. Clarion went on to win the set 25-21, which game them the victory.
“The point at 13-10 changed the set for us,” Mills said. “It was a point that we should never have won. Millersville had a few chances to win it, but couldn't finish. I was proud with the effort shown by our girls today after a long weekend playing four matches in two days.”
With the win, Clarion improves to (19-3 overall, 9-0 PSAC West). It is tied for the best start in school history (2002, 2007, and 2010).
“I am very pleased with the way the season has gone so far,” Mills said. “But it's not how you start, but how you finish. I am more concerned with how we will do once it comes time for the playoffs. We have some very tough matches coming up next week (California and IUP) that we need to focus on. It's going to take a lot of hard work.”
The Golden Eagles will return to action at 7:00 p.m. Friday where they will travel to California University.
