CLARION WRESTLERS HOST #13 KENT STATE FRIDAY
SCHALLES HONORED BY PSAC SUNDAY – SENIOR DAY VS LOCK HAVEN
 
            What a weekend coming up for NCAA D-I Wrestling at Clarion!
 
            The Golden Eagles host #13 ranked Kent State on Friday night at Waldo S. Tippin Gym with match time set for 7 p.m.
 
            NCAA and Clarion wrestling legend Wade Schalles returns Sunday to be honored at halftime of the Golden Eagles match against Lock Haven. He will receive the PSAC's highest honor – The Award of Merit – From PSAC Commissioner Steve Murray. The dual meet begins at 2p.m. on a day that will also honor three seniors including Cameron Moran, Bekzod Abdurakhmonov and Quintas McCorkle at their last home dual meet.
 
            Clarion's matchup against Kent State will air locally on WWCH-AM (1300), while the Lock Haven dual  can be heard locally on C-93 (92.7; WCCR-FM) in Clarion. Both will be on the internet at redzonemedia.com with Rich Herman doing the play by play and John Stroup the color commentary.
 
Wade Schalles
           Schalles return to Tippin Gym Sunday is an exciting time for Golden Eagle wrestling fans. A native of Hollidaysburg, Pa., wrestled at Clarion University from 1971-74. He had an unbelievable career record of 153-5-1, which is a winning percentage of 96.5%. He won NCAA Division I Titles as a sophomore in 1972 at 150-pounds and as a junior in 1973 at 158-pounds and was voted the NCAA's Outstanding Wrestler after winning his first NCAA Championship in 1972. His top seasons were 40-0-1 in 1974, 39-1 in 1972 and 37-0 in 1973. Wade holds the NCAA record for most career pins (106) and was well known exciting wrestling fans with countless pinning combinations.
 
Wade was inducted into the National Wrestling “Hall of Fame” in 1991 and was one of only 15 wrestlers named to the NCAA's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team in 2005 in festivities held in St. Louis, Missouri. Schalles was an inaugural inductee to the Clarion Sports Hall of Fame in 1989.
 
The three seniors honored in pre-match ceremonies on Sunday will be Cameron Moran (James city/Kane), Bekzod Abdurakhmonov (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) and Quintas McCorkle (Alexandria, Va. – T.C. Williams).
 
“Our seniors have provided great leadership and have given a lot to Clarion wrestling and Clarion University during their careers,” said first year Clarion coach Matt Dernlan. “This is our chance to say thank you and congratulate them on a job well done. We're proud to have them in a Clarion singlet.”
 
Moran has a career record at Clarion of 39-32 wrestling this year at 149, at 141 in 2011 and 2010 and 133 in 2009. He was 5th at PSAC's this year, while placing second at 141 in the 2011 season and 4th in the 2010 season. A Marketing major, he is the son of Kevin Moran and Audrie Jones.
 
Abdurakhmonov, who transferred to Clarion from Colby Community College, has a two-year record of 62-16 at 165-pounds. This season he is ranked #5 in the nation at 165, placed 4th at the Midlands tournament and 1st at the PSAC Championships. He has a record this year of 26-4. Last year he missed being an NCAA D-I All-American by one match, posting a nationals record of 3-2 and a season record of 38-12. Bekzod won the PSAC title last year and placed 3rd at EWL's. He is a Sports Management major and is the son of Mohamadjon (father) and Muhabbathon (mother) Abdurakhmonov.
 
McCorkle has had a fulfilling career as Clarion's heavyweight and enters the weekend with a career mark of 72-53. Ranked as high as 17th this season, he has a record this year of 22-10 and won the Oklahoma Invite, was 2nd at the PSU and Knight Point Open and was third at PSAC's. Quintas was 23-13 last year, 3rd at EWL's and PSAC's, while going 26-18 in 2010 and placing 4th at EWL's and 5th at PSAC's. He is an MMAJ&C major and is the son of Sampson & Athena McCorkle.
 
            The Golden Eagles, under first year head coach Matt Dernlan, are 5-6 on the season, 2-3 in the Eastern Wrestling League and riding a four match winning streak. Clarion won at Bloomsburg (22-18), returned home to defeat Cleveland State (45-5) and then traveled to Princeton to knock off the Tigers (36-9) and Franklin & Marshall (42-4).
 
Clarion opened the year traveling to #8 Lehigh losing 27-12, and also 34-13 to #7 Illinois. After a 37-12 loss to #21 Edinboro in December, the Golden Eagles traveled to EMU in early January and defeated Indiana Tech 46-3, while losing 25-12 to Eastern Michigan. Clarion lost a 28-10 decision at #9 Pitt and a 23-20 decision at West Virginia in the final bout before starting their win streak.
 
            Clarion's lineup this weekend will be Trey Hicks (7-16; Jr. Amityville, N.Y.) at 125; Joe Waltko (14-13; Jr. Allison Park, Pa.) at 133; Tyler Bedelyon (15-13; So. Lewistown) at 141; Cameron Moran (12-14, Sr. James City) at 149; #4 James Fleming (22-2; Jr. West Mifflin) at 157; #5 Bekzod Abdurakhmonov (26-4, Sr. Tashkent, Uzbekistan) at 165; Nick Milano (8-12, So. Erie) at 174; Steven Cressley (14-11; Jr. Punxsutawney) at 184; Alex Thomas (21-13; Jr. Seaford, De.) at 197 and Quintas McCorkle (22-10, Sr. Alexandria, Va.) at hwt.
 
            Kent State, under 9th year head coach Jim Andrassy, enters the dual with a 13-5 dual meet record and ranked 14th in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll. The Golden Flashes have marked big wins against Edinboro (22-15), Missouri (18-14), Central Michigan (22-13), Eastern Michigan (28-10) and Rutgers (19-13). Losses are against Minnesota (35-3), Nebraska (19-17), Illinois (24-18) and Ohio State (22-15).
 
            The Kent lineup will be #4 Nic Bedelyon (27-3) at 125; Steve Mitcheff (15-16) at 133; #10 Tyler Small (28-8) at 141; #8 Ian Miller (24-3) at 149; Mallie Shuster (23-14) at 157, Ross Tice (10-12) at 165; Brandonn Johnson (15-20), Casey Newburg (27-9) at 184; Keith Witt (22-13) at 197 and #14 Brendan Barlow (24-10) at 285.
 
            Lock Haven, under third year head coach Robbie Waller, enters the dual with a record of 4-9 and 1-3 in the EWL. Lock Haven wrestles Bloomsburg on Friday. The Bald Eagles have wins against Cleveland State (28-9; Buffalo (17-16) and The Citadel (33-8), with losses coming against Illinois (38-6); Pitt (27-9), Edinboro (28-6), West Virginia (28-12) and Bucknell (28-13).
 
            The Lock Haven lineup has Bobby Rehm (24-15) at 125; John Trumbetti (6-18) at 133; Matt Bonson (14-7) at 141; Owen Wilkinson (21-12) at 149; Aaron Fry (9-10) at 157; Seth Creasy (13-11) at 165; Aaron McKinney (6-21) at 174; Fred Garcia (14-9) at 184; Matt Parlier (4-17) at 197 and Harry Turner (21-15) at 285.
