WOMEN LOOK TO UPSET NO. 2 EDINBORO
The Golden Eagle women (7-16 overall, 6-13 PSAC West) will be looking to pull an upset of unbeaten and No. 2 Edinboro (23-0, 19-0).
Clarion enters the game having won three of its past four at Tippin Gym including a 78-62 win over Lock Haven Wednesday when
Hannah Heeter scored 28 points and grabbed 19 rebounds and
Emma Fickel added 26 points.
Heeter is the leader for the Golden Eagles and has been named PSAC West Freshman of the Week in six straight weeks. She leads the conference in rebounding (11.2 rpg) and is the top freshman scorer (12.7 ppg) while also ranking second in the conference in shooting (58.7 percent), sixth in blocks (1.7) and 19
th overall in scoring. She has recorded 10 double-doubles on the season, all of them coming since Jan. 1 when she is averaging 15.8 points and 13 rebounds per contest. Heeter needs four more rebounds to become the first Clarion freshman since Cheryl Bansek in 1986 to record a double-double for the season, and her 236 rebounds are the fifth-most ever by a Clarion freshman.
Fickel is adding 11.8 ppg and has hit 57 three-pointers while recording back-to-back 20-point contests. She needs three more three-pointers to become the fourth player in school history with multiple seasons of at least 60 threes.
Also for Clarion,
Ann Deibert is adding 9.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, and
Raven Jones chips in 8.6 points and 5.1 assists per contest.
Edinboro, the top scoring (76 ppg) and defensive team (52.2 ppg allowed) in the PSAC is led by Kiara Brown (14.6 ppg), Samantha Blazetic (14.6 ppg, 6.5 rpg) and Renee' Brown (12.3 ppg).
MEN IN MIDDLE OF PLAYOFF RACE
Clarion's men's team (15-10 overall, 11-8 PSAC West) finds itself in the middle of a PSAC playoff race with three games to play. The Golden Eagles are tied for the fourth and final playoff berth awarded to the PSAC West with California, and the two teams meet at Cal Wednesday.
Edinboro (11-12, 9-10), meanwhile, is on life support two games back.
Clarion is led by freshman
Winfield Willis who is the seventh-leading scorer and top freshman scorer in the PSAC (16.6 ppg). Willis' 416 points are the second-most all-time by a Clarion rookie to only the school's all-time leading scorer Kwame Morton (513).
Teer (11.5 ppg, 8.9 rpg) has been on a tear of late for Clarion and has recorded back-to-back double-doubles and double-doubles in three of his last five games including an 18-point, 13-rebound effort in a 72-67 win over Lock Haven Wednesday. In his last six games, he is averaging 13.2 points and 11.7 rebounds per game, and he needs five more boards to reach 500 in his two-year career. He would be the 10
th player under 24
th year head coach
Ron Righter to 500 rebounds and would join McQueen (633) to give Clarion two players with at least 500 rebounds at the same time since Allen Stevens and David Shearer in 2002.
McQueen is adding 14.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest, while
Calvin Edwards is scoring 13.9 points per game and
Leonard Patterson 7.9 points to go with 3.5 assists per contest.
Edinboro is led by Isaiah Prince's 15.4 points per game, while Clint Nicholson is adding 12.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest and Cory Sommerville 12.6 points per game. Jay Fletcher, who had 30 in the first meeting between the clubs, an 86-79 Clarion win Jan. 28, chips in with 11.6 points per game.
Both Clarion teams return to action Wednesday at California before concluding the regular season at Slippery Rock Feb. 25.
