WILLIS NOW 2ND IN FR. SCORING BUT CLARION FALLS AT MERCYHURST

Winfield Willis

Box Score ERIE – Clarion's Winfield Willis scored 16 points and moved into second place in school history in freshman scoring with 385 points on the season, but the Golden Eagles dropped a PSAC West contest at Mercyhurst 91-53 Wednesday night.

Willis, who entered the game needing five points to tie Terry Roseto (374 points in 1974) for second in school history in rookie scoring, reached the mark in the first half when he scored nine points.

But after a hot start that saw it score the game's first seven points and lead 11-3 at the first media timeout, Clarion (14-9 overall, 10-7 PSAC West) went cold from the field, and Mercyhurst (15-6, 13-4) took advantage going on a 17-0 run that helped the Lakers build a 40-28 halftime lead. Mercyhurst then started the second half on a 28-10 run to put the game away.

Andrew Rickard led Mercyhurst with 18 points, while Luis Leao added 17 points and seven rebounds, Matt Lee 14 points and Terrence Ingram 11.

Willis was the only Golden Eagle in double digits, although Bud Teer just missed a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds. Jeremy Schmader from nearby North Clarion High School had three points

Clarion returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Gannon.

NOTES – Willis now trails only Kwame Morton, the school's all-time leading scorer, in freshman scoring. Morton had 531 points in 1991 … With his 12 rebounds, Teer now has 479 rebounds in his career and is 21 shy of 500 in his career. He would join teammate Paul McQueen as the first Clarion teammates to each have 500 rebounds at the same time since David Shearer and Allen Stevens in 2002.
