Box Score CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Despite another solid all-around effort, the Clarion University women's soccer team dropped its first decision of the season, 1-0, at California Friday afternoon.
“That was a very good performance,” Clarion's third-year head coach Rob Eaton said. “We played well. I am not disappointed at all. We played a very good game against an opponent that was ranked higher than us. There were plenty of times during the game that we were playing even with them.”
Cal (3-1-0 overall, 1-0-0 PSAC), which entered the game ranked sixth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Atlantic Region poll, tallied the only goal of the game, and the first allowed by Clarion (1-1-2, 1-1) on the year in the 31
st minute when Haley Henderson headed in a corner kick from Erin Hogan.
“That was a really nice goal off a corner kick,” Eaton said. “It was really unstoppable.”
Henderson's goal, though, was the only one allowed by Clarion sophomore goalie
Laura Saussol, who extended hr school-record streak of not allowing a goal to 341:03 before Henderson capitalized. She quickly started a new streak going the game's final 59:03 without allowing another goal. She made nine saves in the game, as Cal outshot Clarion 22-4.
“The stats are a little deceiving,” Eaton said. “Laura didn't have to make as many big saves as she has in our other three games. A lot of those saves were on long-distance shots. But overall, I am very pleased with how she is playing and how the defense in front of her is playing. To only allow one goal in four games, we must be doing something right.”
Of Clarion's four shots in the game, one, from
Liz Ventura in the 58
th minute, had to be stopped by Cal goalie Ashley Magruda. The Golden Eagles had another chance in the 69
th minute, but a
Casey Harsch shot was high.
Clarion returns to action at 4 p.m. Saturday at Shippensburg.
“Hopefully we can build off this game and go out tomorrow and get a win,” Eaton said.
NOTES – Saussol had three consecutive shutouts before Friday tying the school record for shutouts set by Jenna Kulik in 2009.
