Box Score CLARION, Pa. – Led by double-doubles from
Aaron Johnson and
Mike Kromka, five Clarion University men's basketball players scored in double digits to lead the Golden Eagles to a 90-79 non-conference win over visiting Central Penn Tuesday night.
Johnson, a freshman playing in just his third career game, recorded his second double-double of the season with 19 points and 15 rebounds, while Kromka, a junior, had his third double-double of the year with 12 points and 11 boards. Both players blocked two shots, while Johnson added two assists and a steal and Kromka an assist.
Also scoring in double figures for Clarion (4-7) were
Leonard Patterson with 18,
Marques Jones with 17 and
Calvin Edwards with 14. Patterson also had five rebounds and two assists, Jones added five assists and four boards and Edwards had seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Devon Dorsey led Central Penn (10-9) with 24 points and 13 rebounds but was limited in the second half after suffering an injury late in the first half. He had 15 points and 10 rebounds at the break. Montez Lacey added 10 points, six rebound and three assists with Lamar Drayton chipping in 10 points and five boards.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair with five ties and 15 lead changes before Clarion took a 45-43 halftime lead when Patterson nailed a three-pointer at the horn.
Clarion then took control of the game at the start of the second half using a 19-9 run to move the lead to double digits at 64-52 on a Patterson fast-break layup with 12:17 left. Patterson had five points during the run with Johnson, Edwards and Kromka each adding four.
Central Penn closed back within six, 73-67, with 6:14 to play before the Golden Eagles responded with an 11-3 spurt led by four points each by Johnson and Kromka and a Jones three to go back up by 14, 84-70, with 3:01 left. The Knights never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
Clarion returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mansfield.
NOTES – The 45 first-half points were the most by the Golden Eagles in the first half this year and the most in a first half since scoring 48 vs. Penn State-DuBois Dec. 29, 2011 … Clarion hit nine three points in the game, the second most in a game this year. The Golden Eagles had 11 at Kutztown Dec. 18 … Johnson is averaging 12.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game in his first three contests. He was named the PSAC West Freshman of the Week Monday ... The 90 points are a season high for Clarion.
