Travis Day

Box Score Video Highlights

(Clarion, Pa.): Clarion qb Darelle Carson (Fr. Pgh – Perry) passed for 113 yards and 1 td and Travis Day (So. Jeannette/Hempfield) rushed for 61 yards and a td but it wasn't enough as IUP used a strong running game and Eagle turnovers to down Clarion 42-14 in a PSAC-Western Division and NCAA Division II game on Saturday afternoon.

Held at Clarion's Memorial Stadium, Clarion dropped to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the PSAC-West, while IUP raised its record to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the West.

IUP ran out to a 14-0 lead on the legs of De'Antwan Williams in the first quarter, who finished the game with 129 yards and 2 td's. IUP put together scoring drives of 81 and 73 yards to open the game. Williams capped both drives scoring first on a 4-yard run at 7:L32 of the first quarter, then on a 20-yard run with 1:57 left in the first to lead 14-0. Williams rushed 10 times for 63 yards in the first drive and twice for 24 yards on the second.

Clarion came right back and challenged IUP in the second quarter. The Golden Eagles drove 70 yards in 8 plays to narrow the lead to 14-7. Travis Day rushed for 23 yards to start the drive, and Carson posted a 20-yard rush three plays later to take the pigskin to the IUP 18. Day ran for 7 yards to the 11, then scored on an 11-yard td run that saw him break several tackles and get into the endzone. Phil Esposito's (Fr. Brockway) PAT made it 14-7 at 14:11 of the second quarter.

The Clarion defense held and the eagles got the ball back and mounted another impressive drive. Starting from its own 20, Carson passed to Zach Deitrick (Fr. Upper St. Clair) for 10 yards, and three plays later hit Eric Frye (Fr. Pgh – Perry) for 20 yards to the Clarion 47. Carson had runs of 11 and 12 yards, sandwiched around a 6 yard dash by Bobby Thomas (Jr. Reading/Exeter Twp.) and Clarion had the ball first and ten at the IUP 24. The drive stalled at the 20 and Esposito came on to try a 38-yard field goal, but the try missed to the left and the score remained 14-7.

The defense held again and Clarion got the ball back at its own 30. In a three minute span, IUP secured the game. Carson, out with a hand injury, was replaced by backup Matt Futkos (Fr. Youngstown, Oh./Fitch). On third down Futkos fumbled and IUP's Carl Fleming recovered at the Clarion 30. On the next play IUP qb Mike Box hit Terrill Barnes on a 30-yard td pass for a 21-7 lead at 5:37 of the second.

On Clarion's next drive qb Futkos was injured, and with both Carson and Futkos out of the game, Clarion lined up in a Wildcat formation. On third down Bobby Thomas had his pass intercepted by Marco Pecora and returned 45 yards for a touchdown. The PAT was good, and IUP took control of the game leading 28-7 at halftime.

IUP made it 35-7 early in the third when Box scored on a 1-yard run at 13:30.

IUP went ahead 42-7 when Drew Carswell hit Steve Franco on a 21-yard td pass with 10:23 to go in the game.

Clarion drove 60-yards in 5 plays to score its final points. The drive was capped when Carson hit Jon Reid on a 35-yard td pass at 7:48 of the fourth. Esposito's PAT made the final score 42-14.
