ARTHUR #17 & SHERLOCK #18

CLARION WRESTLERS HOST RUTGERS IN HOME OPENER FRIDAY AT TIPPIN

The 2013-14 Clarion University wrestling team will roll out the home mats on Friday, November 22 when the Golden Eagles host Rutgers in an NCAA Division I wrestling match at Tippin Gymnasium.

Match time is set for 7pm and you can hear all the action on WCCH-AM (1300) and on the internet at www.redzonemedia.com with Rich Herman and former Eagle mentor and Wrestling Hall of Fame member Bob Bubb  (1967-92) calling the action.

Clarion enters the dual meet with a 2-2 overall record that was compiled at the Eastern Michigan Duals last Saturday. Clarion opened with a 34-3 win over Campbellsville (Ky.) and a 43-6 win over Tiffin, before dropping a 21-15 decision to Northern Illinois and a 26-15 loss to host Eastern Michigan.

Led by second year head coach Troy Letters, who guided Clarion to a 5-10 dual meet record, a second place finish at the PSAC Championships, fourth at EWL's and 33rd at the NCAA Division I Nationals in the 2013 season, the Golden Eagles enter the 2014 season with some veterans, but a host of freshmen and newcomers in the lineup.

"Yes we're very young," conceded Letters, "but I think we will bring a very exciting brand of wrestling to Tippin Gymnasium this year. Our vets are leading, and our freshmen are learning as fast as they can. We will likely weight in six freshmen on Friday, but I think our crowd will appreciate their talent and want to watch this team grow."

The Golden Eagle lineup will likely have Jonathan Mele (Fr. 6-3, Berkeley Hts. N.j.) at 125, #18 Sam Sherlock (Jr. 6-3, West Mifflin) at 133, Tyler Bedelyon (Sr. 1-5, Lewistown) at 141, #17 Justin Arthur (Fr. 11-1, Huntington, W.V.) at 149, Austin Matthews (Fr. 3-1, Greenville) at 157, Michael Pavasko (Fr. 7-2, Munhall) at 165, Ryan Darch (Jr. 5-4, Batavia, N.Y.) at 174, Dustin Conti (Fr. 1-2, Jefferson) or Daniel Sutherland (Jr. 4-3, North Bellmore, N.y.) at 184, Brandon Contreras (Sr. 4-5, Rochester, N.y.) at 197 and Evan Daley (Fr. 5-4, Erie, Pa.) at 285.

The Scarlet Knights, led by sixth year head coach Scott Goodale, are off to a 2-0 start this season with a 22-21 win over Hofstra and a 16-15 win over Boston University.

Rutgers has three returning NCAA National Qualifiers in #17 ranked Billy Smith (6-1) at 285, plus Nick Visicaro (2-4 at 65) and Vinne Dellefave (1-0) at 133. Also very talented are Scott Delvecchio (7-3) at 125, Phil Bakuckas (6-2) at 174, Dan Seidenberg (5-2) at 184 and Hayden Hrymack (9-1) at 197.
