CLARION WRESTLERS LOSE 30 – 12 TO RUTGERS
(CLARION, PA.): Clarion freshman
Justin Arthur (Huntington, W.V.) and Austin Matthews (Greenville/Reynolds) both won by fall but it wasn't enough as the Golden Eagles lost 30-12 to Rutgers in NCAA Division I wrestling on Friday night at Tippin Gymnasium.
Clarion's record drops to 2-3 overall while Rutgers ups its record to 3-0 on the young season.
Clarion trailed 11-0 after dropping the first three bouts, when the dynamic freshmen duo took to the mat for the Golden Eagles.
Arthur brought the Tippin Gym crowd of 600 to its feet when he threw a headlock on Ken Theobold and pinned him at 2:26. Ranked 17
th in the latest AWN poll at 149-pounds, Arthur raised his season record as a true freshman to 12-1.
Matthews followed with an even more exciting finish to his bout against Anthony Perrotti at 157-pounds. Trailing 2-0 in the third period, Matthews used a cradle to tilt Perrotti to tie the score at 2-2, and also had riding time pending. Matthews adjusted his cradle and slowly worked it late in the period for a fall at 6:45, again bringing the Tippin faithful to their feet – giving Clarion its only lead of the night at 12-11. Matthews is now 4-1.
"They are fun and exciting to watch," said second year Clarion head coach
Troy Letters. "You don't want to turn way, something could happen that fast."
Rutgers took the lead back at 165 when Nick Visicaro decisioned
Mike Pavasko (FR. Munhall) 8-2 at 165, then went on to win the final four bouts to win 30-12.
Clarion had two good chances to win in the upper weights. At 184 freshman
Dustin Conti (Jefferson-Morgan) held a 1-0 lead, plus riding time, into the final minute of his bout with Dan Seidenberg. The Knight escaped with about 33 seconds left, and needing a takedown to win, got it on the edge of the mat with 16 seconds remaining for a 3-1 win.
At 197 Clarion's
Dan Sutherland (Jr. No. Bellmore, N.Y.) led 7-5 in the third period. Trying to score on a single leg shot, Sutherland got caught and pinned at 5:56 by Hayden Hrymack.
