Box Score CLARION, Pa. – A 15-2 IUP run midway through the second half helped the visiting Crimson Hawks pull away from Clarion for a 68-47 win in PSAC West men's basketball action Saturday night at Clarion's Tippin Gym.
The Golden Eagles (1-2 overall, 0-2 PSAC West) had cut a 15-point halftime deficit, 37-22, to five, 43-38, with an 11-2 run that had Tippin Gym rocking. The Golden Eagles then had a chance to get within three, but a
Darius Stevens layup rimmed in and rimmed out, and IUP answered with the run that put the game away.
Mike Kromka (Monroeville/Gateway) led Clarion with 16 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots, but was the lone Golden Eagles in double digits, as Clarion shot just 32.1 percent (17 of 53) from the field and 3 of 19 from beyond the arc.
Freshman
BJ Andrews added nine points, while Stevens had eight points and eight rebounds and
DeMarius Miller eight points, although he shot just 3 of 11. Marcus Jones added five points on 1 of 12 shooting and added four assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Devante Chance led four IUP players in double digits with 18 points while adding five rebounds. Mathis Keita had 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals, Marcel Souberbielle chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds and Devon Cotrell had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The game was tight through the first 10 minutes with Clarion trailing 14-10 following an Andrews' jumper at the 10:26 mark. But IUP went on s 15-3 run that helped the Crimson Hawks build a 37-22 halftime lead.
That lead got to 16, 39-23, early in the second half before Clarion's 11-2 run fueled by five points from Andrews closed the gap to five with 13:25 to play. But IUP ran right back and put the game away.
Clarion returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when it hosts Central Penn in a non-conference game.
