CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion University women's volleyball team secured a home PSAC Playoff match with a 3-0 win over visiting IUP before 300-plus at Tippin Gym Tuesday night.

The Golden Eagles (28-2 overall, 17-1 PSAC West) made quick work of the visiting Crimson Hawks (11-19, 7-11), who were coming off an upset win over third-place Seton Hill Saturday, topping IUP by scores of 25-20, 25-16, 25-13.

"I am super happy with the way we played," Clarion head coach Jennifer Mills said. "We were fairly consistent tonight. We blocked better and all of our hitters worked hard to be available."

With the win, Clarion is assured of hosting a PSAC Playoff match for the first time since beating Edinboro in the 2010 PSAC Championship match at Tippin Gym. The Golden Eagles, who entered the night in a first-place tie with California, can't finish lower than second in the PSAC West and will host a conference quarterfinal game later this month.

"That's great," Mills said. "This is a place where we want to play. I am proud of the community and the university, how they have backed us. This is an emotional place to play. Its fun to walk into this atmosphere."

Emily Stewart led the attack for Clarion with 12 kills and a .333 hitting percentage (12 kills, 3 errors, 27 attempts). She completed a double-double with 10 digs.

"We've been working on Emily's consistency," Mills said. "She is finding here comfort level and being more aggressive."

Behind Stewart, Clarion hit a robust .272 (41-14-103) as a team.

Carlie Bieranowski chipped in with 11 kills, and six Golden Eagles had between two and five kills with Corinne Manley on the high end of that group.

Morgan Seybold paced a solid defensive effort gathering 15 of Clarion's 49 team digs.

"I thought Morgan had a great night," Mills said.

The Golden Eagles also had nine blocks with Manley leading the way with three and held IUP to a .036 hitting percentage (27-23-110).

Laura Subject, fresh off becoming the first Clarion women's volleyball player to earn three PSAC West Player of the Week honors in the same season, continued her solid play with 33 set assists, six digs and two service aces.

Lisa Kissell led IUP with seven kills, while Kelly Barnes had 12 digs and Lindsay Moeller 22 set assists.

The match was never in doubt as Clarion started strong from the opening moments of the first set jumping out to a 5-1 lead. That was one of three 5-1 runs in the set for Clarion. The second one gave the Golden Eagles a 13-6 lead with the third pushing the advantage to 21-13.

In the second set, Clarion once again jumped out quick taking an early 5-2 lead before three straight Crimson Hawk points tied the match at five.

After that, it was all Golden Eagles.

Bieranowski keyed an 8-2 run with four kills to give Clarion a 13-7 lead.

IUP tried to make it interesting getting back within two, 15-13, but a 10-3 set-ending run gave Clarion a 2-0 lead. Bieranowski had two kills with Hannah Heeter and Manley each adding one during the deciding spurt.

The third set saw a slim 5-4 lead quickly turn into a 12-4 Clarion advantage, and IUP never got closer than six the rest of the way.

Clarion returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday when it hosts Gannon in the next to the last regular-season home match of the season. The Golden Eagles finish regular-season home play at 1 p.m. Saturday vs. Mercyhurst before closing out the regular season with road matches at Edinboro and Slippery Rock the following weekend.

NOTES – The 28 wins ties for the fourth most wins in a season in school history with the 2007 team. The school record for wins is 32 in 2010. The 2002 team won 31 matches, while the 2004 team won 29.
