FLEMING GETS 117TH WIN/EAGLES LOSE 24-18 TO OHIO U

James Fleming

(CLARION, Pa.):  Clarion senior James Fleming (West Mifflin) posted his 117th career win, and three other Golden Eagles won bouts, but Ohio University used two pins to down Clarion 24-18 in an NCAA Division I Wrestling match on Friday night.

Held at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium, Clarion's record dipped to 3-7 overall while Ohio University improved their record to 7-5.

Clarion's #4 ranked James Fleming won by forfeit at 157, even though Ohio University had weighed in a wrestler at that weight class. Fleming's record improved to 25-2 this season and gives him a career mark of 117-18, ahead of former 2-time NCAA Champion and 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle, who was 116-10-2 from 1988-92.

Ohio University jumped out to a 9-0 lead when Joe Waltko (Sr. Allison Park) lost 6-1 to Joseph Munos at 133, then Sam Sherlock (So. West Mifflin) lost 4-3 to Kagan Squire at 141 and Tyler Bedelyon (Jr. Lewistown) lost 6-2 to Andrew Romanchik at 149.

Fleming's forfeit win brought Clarion to within 9-6, but Harrison Hightower pinned Clarion's Nick Milano (Jr. Erie/Cathedral Prep) at 165, and #16 rated Cody Walters held on to defeat the Eagles Ryan Darch (So. Batavia, N.Y.) 2-1 at 174. Darch tied the match with an escape in the third period, but Walters had 1:15 in riding time.

Clarion senior Steven Cressley (Sr. Punxsutawney) won by injury default at 18-seconds over Ryan Garringer at 184. Cressley notched a takedown off the whistle, then started an arm bar that injured Garringer. He tried to continue but had to injury default – and the win brought Clarion back to within 18-12.

The Eagles cut the deficit to 18-15 at 197-pounds when Justin Ortega (Sr. Oxford)  decisioned Phillip Wellington 4-0 at 197 to move his record to 15-11, but #15 ranked Jeremy Johnson pinned Clarion's Phil Catrucco (Sr. Sharpsville)  at 1:49 to put the match out of reach.

Clarion's Tyler Fraley (Fr. Freehold, N.J.) upped his record to 11-9 at 125 with a 5-2 win over Kevon Powell to make the final score 24-18.

Clarion travels to Cleveland State on Sunday for a 1pm match.
