EAGLES LOSE 28-0 AT MERCYHURST

CLARION GRIDDERS LOSE 28-0 AT MERCYHURST
 
                (Erie, Pa.): Clarion qb Darelle Carson passed for 113 yards and ran for 13 yards but the Golden Eagles couldn't find the endzone on Saturday and lost 28-0 to Mercyhurst I an NCAA Division II and PSAC-Western Division contest.
 
                Played at Tullio Field, Clarion drops to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC-West, while Mercyhurst raised their record to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the West.
 
                Mercyhurst took a 7-0 lead at 5:12 of the first quarter when Brandon Brown-Dukes took a shuffle pass from Brendan Boylan and went 19-yards for the go-ahead touchdown. The drive went 77-yards in 13-plays.
 
                Late in the first quarter the Golden Eagles had a great opportunity to tie the game, when the defense came up with a big play. The Lakers Brown-Dukes caught a short pass in the left flat, but safety Cory McNamara came up with a strong hit, popped the ball loose and linebacker Jared Davis recovered at the Laker 47.
 
                After getting two first downs to the Laker 26, Clarion qb Darelle Carson hit receiver Matt Lehman with a big 15-yard pass play to the Laker 11 for a first and ten. The drive stalled and Scott Ayers came on to try a 30-yard field goal, but the boot was wide left keeping the score at 7-0.
 
                On the ensuing Mercyhurst drive, on third and 8 at the Laker 22, Boylan hit a screen pass to Drew Robinson, who sprinted up the middle , then down the right sideline for 78-yards and a big score giving Mercyhurst a 14-0 lead at 9:39 of the second quarter.
 
                Late in the first half, a short punt gave Mercyhurst possession at the Clarion 29 and the Lakers used the field position to go ahead 21-0. Drew Robinson capped the short drive with a 17-yard td run and Mercyhurst led 21-0 at halftime.
 
7984                Early in the second half Clarion mounted a nice drive and again threatened to score. Starting at midfield, Delrece Williams ran for 4 yards, then Carson lofted a perfect pass down the left sideline to Matt Lehman for 33 yards and a first down at the Laker 13. Carson rushed for 1 yards, Then Bobby Thomas (photo left) off left tackle for 7 put the pigskin at the Mercyhurst 5.  Thomas tried a sweep right, but was tacked for a 4 yard loss to the 9. On fourth down Carson tried a pass to Trent Shanahan in the back of the endzone but the pass was too far and the incompletion turned the ball over on downs.
 
                Clarion had great field position on its next drive as well, but after a three and out, punter Scott Ayers had his attempt blocked and recovered at the Clarion 16. On first down Boylan hit Andrew Miller for a 16-yard td and the 28-0 final score at 3:17 of the third quarter.
 
                Clarion managed 191 yards of offense including 78 rushing and 113 passing. Bobby Thomas led the ground attack with 42 yards on 11 carries, while Delrece Williams had 18 yards on 9 tries. QB Darelle Carson completed 9 of 29 passes for 113 yards, while Matt Lehman caught 3 passes for 63 yards.
 
                Clarion's defense was led by noseguard Andrew Fragale who had 7 stops and 1 tfl, with Brian Palmiere getting 5 hits, Jared Davis 4 stops and 1 fumble recovery.
 
                Mercyhurst collected 304 yards of offense including 63 rushing yards and 241 passing yards. Boylan hit on 14 of 25 passes for 241 yards and 3 td's. Brandon Brown Dukes rushed for 46 yards and 1 td, and caught 2 passes for 28 yards and 1 score. Drew Robinson had 2 catches for 8 yards and 1 td.
 
                Clarion returns to Memorial Stadium next Saturday for Family Day when the Golden Eagles host Edinboro at 6pm.
