CLARION, Pa.- The Clarion Golden Eagles defeated the Mansfield Mountaineers late Saturday afternoon 2-0 at Clarion's Memorial Stadium.
The first Golden Eagle goal came in the 17
th minute of the game on a crazy play.
Alissa Spencer had just received the ball from
Anna Chamberlin who played it back. Spencer booted the ball from about 50 yards out looking for a solid cross, however, the ball bounced about ten yards from the goal line. The Goalkeeper for Mansfield, Sarah Nezelek, came out to receive the ball on a bounce, but unfortunately for her it bounced over her head and rolled into the net.
"I was just trying to play in a ball and it just bounced and went over [the keeper], so I was pretty excited," said Spencer after the match. "When I was seeing it, I was like 'oh no, it's going, it's going,' and then when I saw it go in I just went crazy I was so excited."
The second Golden Eagle goal came off an accurate pass by
Erin Rodgers on a throw in. She found Chamberlin on a route who nailed the ball into the back of the net in the 54
th minute of the match.
"[Rodgers] took a quick throw to [Chamberlin] and [Chamberlin] just pulled it down and hit a left foot bullet with great timing too," said Clarion Head Coach
Sean Esterhuizen.
The Golden Eagles grabbed the victory though Mansfield outshot Clarion 20-16. Clarion finished as a team with six shots on goal. Mansfield put 10 shots on net, however,
Laura Saussol stopped everyone earning herself another shutout.
"I think our defense did really well. We worked really great together as a unit and we covered each other off really well too," Spencer added after the match.
"We've been struggling to put the ball in the net. It's gratifying to come away with two great goals," stated Esterhuizen. I think in general it's a great confidence booster to come off the pitch with a 2-0 win."
The Golden Eagles improved their record to 3-6-1 with the victory over Mansfield. The Mountaineers drop to 2-8 on the season with the loss. Clarion closes out a three game home stand Wednesday night at Memorial Stadium in a matchup with the East Stroudsburg Warriors at 6 p.m.
