VOLLEYBALL: PSAC WEST CHAMPIONS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - PSAC West champions!

The Clarion University women's volleyball team claimed its second straight PSAC West title with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-15) win at Slippery Rock Friday night.

It is the third PSAC West title for the Golden Eagles (28-3 overall, 19-2) and the first time Clarion has won back-to-back titles. Clarion is the first PSAC West team to repeat as West champions since California (Pa.) won its third straight West title in 2009. The Golden Eagles fourth different school to defend a PSAC West title since 1991. In addition to Cal, Lock Haven won four straight from 2003-06 and back-to-back titles in 1998-99 and Edinboro won four straight from 1994-97.

"We are definitely pleased," Clarion's eighth-year head coach Jennifer Mills, who has won her third PSAC West title since 2010, said. "We really have a great group of kids who have gotten better each match, and the result is winning the West. But we still have a lot of work to do. We aren't done yet. Our goal tomorrow is to get better."

Laura Subject ran a near flawless offense that hit .224 (47-21-116) with 43 set assists, five digs and three blocks.

Taylor Braunagel led Clarion's offense with 12 kills while hitting .381 (12 kills, 4 errors, 21 attempts).

Gabrielle Olson added 10 kills and four blocks and hit .400 (10-2-20).

Abbey Cox and Mackenzie Biggs also had huge hitting nights with Cox hitting .500 (8-1-14) with four blocks, while Biggs hit .455 (7-2-11).

Catherine Ferragonio chipped in seven kills and eight digs, while Carlie Bieranowski had 10 digs and Morgan Seybold 14 digs.

Emily Sokolowski paced Slippery Rock (16-14, 9-12) with seven kills and five blocks, and Kristy Lake added six kills. Kristen C. Smith had 11 digs.

Clarion is next in action at 1 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Edinboro for Senior Day. The Golden Eagles will then host a a first-round PSAC Playoff match at 7 p.m. Tuesday against a team to be announced. The game will be a White Out with the first 200 Clarion University students with a valid ID.
