Mike Kromka reached the milestone in dramatic fashion netting 34 points including 13 in the final 2:22 and eight in the final 46 seconds in a 98-90 loss at Edinboro.
Kromka, who had 12 points at halftime, looked like he was going to fall just shy of becoming the 29
th player in school history to score 1,000 points when he was sitting on 21 points in the game and 988 in his career with just over two minutes to play.
But 6-foot-6 forward from Monroeville, Pa. and Gateway High School exploded over the final 2:22 netting the 12 points plus one he needed for the milestone while hitting five shots, including a 3-pointer, and a pair of free throws.
It started when he nailed a 3-pointer at the 2:22 mark to cut Edinboro's lead to 94-78. He followed with a layup 15 seconds later before a dunk at the 46-second mark got him within five points of the milestone. He then hit one of two charity shots with 28 seconds left before getting an old-school 3-point play at the 20-second mark when he was fouled by Guy Rundle.
Then, after a Johnny Marsh turnover with 19 seconds to play, Kromka got a layup with 17 seconds left to give him 1,001 career points.
Finishing off a double-double with 10 rebounds, Kromka also finished his career with 729 rebounds, the sixth most at Clarion since records became available in 1971. The 34 points were a career high, and it was his seventh double-double of the season and the 16
