Box Score JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Despite another monster double-double by
Mike Kromka, the Clarion University men's basketball team dropped a 78-67 decision on the road at Pitt-Johnstown Wednesday night.
Kromka, who had a double-double by halftime, recorded 20 points and 17 rebounds, his second double-double of at least 20 points and 15 rebounds in the past three games.
Marques Jones added 19 points giving him 73 in his past four games (18.3 ppg).
The game flowed back-and-forth throughout the second half with Clarion (4-15 overall, 2-9 PSAC West) rallying from a five-point, 34-29, halftime deficit to tie the game at 44 early in the half on a Kromka 3-pointer, one of two by the senior in the game, before Pitt-Johnstown (12-9, 5-6) used a 16-2 run to break open a 60-46 lead halfway through the half. Bill Luther hit a pair of 3-pointers for six points during the stretch with Nate Snodgrass adding four more points.
The Golden Eagles answered right back with a 12-2 run of its own thanks to six points from Jones to get back within four, 62-58, on a
Tyrone McFadden old-school 3-pointer with six minutes to play.
The Mountain Cats, though, scored the game's next five points to go up nine and still led by eight, 68-60, with less than three minutes to play when Jones gave Clarion a last bit of hope by nailing a 3-pointer to close the gap to five with 2:26 to play. But Luther answered with a three of his own at the 1:58 mark that proved to be the final nail in the coffin for the Golden Eagles.
Anthony Baker continued his strong play of late by adding 14 points for Clarion, while
Aaron Johnson had 10 rebounds and six points.
Luther led Pitt-Johnstown with 20 points and seven rebounds while Snodgrass added 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals. A.J. Leahey chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots off the bench.
Clarion has a rare off day Saturday before returning to action next Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Seton Hill.
NOTES – Kromka had 11 points and 10 rebounds at halftime. He had 26 points and 15 rebounds a week ago in Clarion's upset overtime win over Slippery Rock … It marked the fourth time this year Kromka, who entered the game second in the PSAC in rebounding (8.8 rpg) has had at least 15 rebounds in a game. Going into this season, Kromka had recorded at least 15 rebounds in a game twice in his career … With the 20 points, Kromka now has 896 in his career. With four more he will become the 38
th player in school history with 900.
