CLARION'S CALHOUN SMASHES NCAA RECORD TO WIN 3 METER DIVING AT NCAA'S

(Geneva, Ohio): Clarion University senior diver Heath Calhoun (Renfrew/Butler) waited until his final event and won his first NCAA Division II Diving title in record fashion smashing the NCAA Record with 615.95 points on 3 meter springboard  leading the Golden Eagle divers on the final day of the NCAA Division II Championships held at the Spire Aquatic Center in Geneva, Ohio.

Clarion's men placed 13th in the final team standings at the NCAA D-II Nationals with 108 points. Drury won the team title with 569.5, Florida Southern second with 361 and Wayne State third with 358.5.

Calhoun, who had a dominating performance, won the 3 meter event with 615.95 points, breaking the old record held by Christopher White in 2012 with 581.65 points – breaking the NCAA D-II record by 34.30 points. He also defeated runner-up Dylan Szegedi (Wayne State) by 54.15 points.

"I'm really ecstatic right now," said a happy Calhoun. "We talked about this all year, me and coach Hrovat, about how my favorite event, 3 meter, was the final event at nationals and how it set up for me.  Everything lined up for me just right. Nationals was close to home, my friends and family were here, and I had the meet of my life. It doesn't get any better than this."

When asked if he was in the zone Calhoun left little doubt. "It all started for me on Tuesday in the pre-qualification meet.  When I was on the diving board everything just felt right.  I just felt I couldn't miss."

Calhoun added a comment about his coach and the Clarion divers. "Among us we talked all week about winning all four events for coach Hrovat. He's done so much for us – he 's like our second father     - and to win all four for him is a great feeling. There's no place like Clarion and as far as I'm concerned there's not a closer diving team in the country. This was awesome."

Calhoun also placed second on 1 meter on Thursday with 551.90 points. He finished his career as a 6-time All-American having placed second on 3 meter with 558.90 points and 9th on 1 meter with 465.40 points IN 2013. He was also 3rd on 3 meter in 2012 and 11th on 1 meter.

Clarion divers Seth Brandenburg (Sr. Canton, Oh./Massillon Perry) was 5th on 3 meter scoring 486.65 points, while freshman Collin Vest (Larksville/Wyoming Valley West) placed 6th on 3 meter with 485.50 points. Nick Larmon (So. Lemoore,Pa.) also placed 12th with 461 points.

Brandenburg finished his career as a 6-time All-American having placed 10th on 1 meter this year scoring 450.75 points, while also placing 6th on 3 meter and 10th on 1 meter in 2012, and 10th on 3 meter and 12th on 1 meter in 2011.

Vest is a 2-time All-American and a national champion. Along with his 6th place finish Saturday on 3 meter, he was the 2014 NCAA Division II Champion on 1 meter scoring 552.40. topping teammate Calhoun by .50 points.

Larmon becomes a 4-time All-American in two seasons. Along with his 12th place finish on 3 meter he was 7th on 1 meter in 2014, while placing 10th on 3 meter and 16th place finish on 1 meter in 2013.

Clarion diving coach Dave Hrovat, in his 24th season with the Golden Eagles, who is a 21-time NCAA Coach of the Year, might have had done his best coaching job to date. The Golden Eagles crowned all four NCAA Champions for the first time since 2002 when Amanda Earnest won both women's events and Shawn Colten won both men's titles. Hrovat now has 42 NCAA individual champions and 253 All-Americans.

"All credit to our divers," said the humble Hrovat. "They worked so hard all season long and now see the fruits of their labors. Each diver here did personal bests at the nationals, and that's all any coach can ask for. I am truly fortunate to have a team full of great divers with so much pride, character and determination. More important – they are fun to be around and are all great friends."
