WOMEN'S BBALL NEARLY KNOCKS OFF DEFENDING PSAC CHAMPS EDINBORO

EDINBORO, Pa. - Oh so close.

The Clarion University women's basketball team nearly pulled off the upset of defending PSAC and NCAA Division II Atlantic Region champion Edinboro before falling 64-59 to the Fighting Scots Saturday afternoon at Edinboro.

Clarion (1-16 overall, 0-12 PSAC West) led by one, 54-53, following a jumper by freshman Ameshia Harden-Pullium, who had a career-high 17 points, with 4:38 to play before Edinboro went on an 11-2 run to take control of the game.

Nicole Johnson, who had 10 points for Edinboro, got the run started with four straight points that gave the Fighting Scots (12-5, 9-4) the lead for good, and Lauren Hippo added four points during the spurt that saw Clarion get back to within one, 57-56, one more time on a Harden-Pullium layup with 3:02 left but close no farther.

Tania Holmes led the Golden Eagles with 19 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists and now has 59 points in her last three games and 17 rebounds in her last two contests.

Harden-Pullium playing within minutes of her hometown of Erie, added six assists and three rebounds, while Delrika Jones-Carey continued her solid play of late with 14 points and four rebounds. Jen Straw added seven points and seven rebounds for Clarion.

Valerie Majewski led Edinboro with 18 points, four assists and three steals, while Hippo added 16 points and six rebounds. Laurel Lindsey, who was honored before the game for scoring her 1,000th career points recently, chipped in with 13 points, eight assists, eight rebounds and three steals and Johnson added eight rebounds as well.

The game was close throughout with Edinboro taking an early 12-4 lead before Clarion fought back to go ahead 25-21 with just under five minutes to play in the first half thanks to an 11-0 run that featured five points from Straw and four from Holmes.

But the Fighting Scots answered with a 12-2 run to close out the first half with a 33-27 lead. Majewski had five to pace the run with Lindsey adding four.

Edinboro then went up eight, 35-27, early in the second half before an 8-1 run that saw Holmes hit a pair of threes got Clarion back within a point, 36-35, four minutes into the half.

The Fighting Scots once again forged ahead by as many as seven a couple of times before the mid-second half run by the Golden Eagles put Clarion back in front.

Clarion returns to action at 6 p.m. Wednesday when it travels to Slippery Rock.
