Game Recap: Basketball (Women's) |

JONES-CAREY HAS MONSTER DOUBLE-DOUBLE BUT WOMEN'S BBALL FALLS AT CHEYNEY

CHEYNEY, Pa. - Clarion's Delrika Jones-Carey had a monster double-double with 22 points and 18 rebounds, but Cheyney held off a late comeback attempt from the visiting Golden Eagles to get a 60-53 win Saturday afternoon.

Jones-Carey had netted career highs in both points with 22 and rebounds with 18 and had the most rebounds in a game for Clarion since Hannah Heeter grabbed 18 against California (Pa.) Feb. 27, 2013. It was the second straight double-double for the sophomore from Pittsburgh's Woodland Hills High School who now has 43 points and 28 boards in those two games.

Jasmine Boyd added eight points and nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles (1-11 overall, 0-7 PSAC West), while Maria Taylor had eight points and Amesha Harden-Pullium five points and six assists.

Cheyney, though, got a game-high 23 points to go with 12 rebounds from Kyra Hines-Allen to offset Jones-Carey's big day, while TaKayla Ellis added nine points and Aerie DeJesus eight.

The Wolves (2-10 overall, 2-4 PSAC East) led by six, 30-24, at halftime and then started the second half on an 11-4 run to go up by 13, 41-28, following a Hines-Allen free throw with 14:11 to play.

Cheyney's lead was still 10, 56-46, following another Hines-Allen free throw with 4:30 to go before Clarion made a late push going on a 7-1 spurt to close the deficit to four, 57-53, on a Jones-Carey jumper with 1:33 to play. Harden-Pullium hit a key 3-pointer during the run.

Clarion then got a key stop on defense when Hines-Allen missed a layup with 59 seconds to play, but Keri Steuer missed a layup on the other end with 39 seconds left, and Cheney got a free throw from Amber Grenwright to make it a five-point game. Tania Holmes and Boyd then missed three's on the other end, and Hines-Allen knocked home a pair of charity shots with four seconds to play to seal the game.

The Golden Eagles return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday at Millersville.
