Tania Holmes scored 28 points and had 11 rebounds, and teammate
Delrika Jones-Carey added 17 points and 14 rebounds, but the Golden Eagles dropped their season opener at West Virginia State on Friday night by a final score of 80-69.
Clarion is now 0-1 and WV State 1-0 and the Golden Eagles will play Shepherd on Sunday at 1pm.
Clarion fell behind in the first quarter 23-14, but fought back to trail by only two points, 33-31 at halftime. Down 29-18 with 8:31 to go before halftime, the Golden Eagles outscored WV State 13-4 to close the gap.
Stevie Ray scored 5 points during that stretch, including a three-pointer that tied the game at 31 with 55-seconds left before intermission, but Trina Current's jumper gave WV State the 33-31 lead heading to the locker room.
Clarion trailed by only 5 points after the third quarter, 50-45, and only trailed by 5, 63-58 with 3:30 remaining in the game on Jones-Carey's lay-up, but WV State saw Rachel Ward hit a three, followed by two free throws from Alexus Hobbs to push the lead to 10 at 68-58 and the Eagles couldn't close the gap from there.
Tania Holmes scored 27 points and added 11 rebounds with 5 steals and 1 assist.
Delrika Jones-Carey had 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Nicole Maxson added 7 points and
Tyra Polite had 6 points and 7 rebounds.
Clarion shot 28 of 78 from the floor (35.9%), but 3 for 22 from the three point line (13.6%).
WV State put five players in double figures with Laura Szorenyi led the way with 23 points.
