CLARION MEN'S BASKETBALL OPENS WITH 90-78 LOSS TO WHEELING JESUIT (Shepherdstown, W.V.): Clarion point guard
Andre Anthony posted 20 points and 6 assists and guard
Justin Dobbs added 19 points and 6 rebounds, but the Golden Eagle Men's Basketball team dropped a hard-fought 90-78 season opener to Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday night at the Shepherd Tournament.
Both team shots the ball well in the game, with Clarion converting on 26 of 51 field goal attempts (51%), while Wheeling canned 33 of 61 shots (54.1%).
Wheeling led the Golden Eagles by 11 at halftime – 45-34. Even though Wheeling pushed the lead to 16 midway through the second half at 72-56, the Golden Eagles made a run and got back in the game.
An old-fashioned three-point play by
Larry Johnson Jr. cut the lead to 9 at 80-71 with 5:18 remaining. The Eagles had a couple shots to get the score closer, but Wheeling's Justin Fritts nailed two consecutive three to run the lead back out to 86-71 and Clarion could get no closer than 11 after that.
Andre Anthony was 6 of 12 from the floor and 6 of 6 from the free throw line to collect his 20 points. He also added 6 assists and 2 steals.
Justin Dobbs meanwhile hit 7 of 13 from the floor and 3 of 4 from the foul line for his 19 tallies, plus added 6 rebounds and 1 assist.
Also in double figures for Clarion was
Larry Johnson Jr. who had 13 points,
while BJ Andrews chipped in with 11.
Clarion back in action on Sunday night playing host Shepherd at 6pm.
