Andre Anthony hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 87 with 21-seconds remaining, but Shepherd's Naim Muhammad tipped in a missed shot as the buzzer sounded to send Shepherd to an 89-87 win over the Golden Eagles on Sunday night.
The Golden Eagles are now 0-2 on the season, while Shepherd is 1-1. Clarion will begin PSAC-West play on Wednesday night when the Golden Eagles host Gannon at Tippin Gym at 7:30pm.
Clarion 73-65 with 5:43 remaining, but the never-say-die Eagles fought back
. BJ Andrews scored an old-fashioned three-point play, then Anthony hit a jumper to pull the Eagles to within 3 at 73-70. Andrews hit a deep three pointer to tie the game at 78-78 with 2:34 left, but Steffan Davis hit a three to put the Rams in front 81-78.
Clarion's
Rob Agurs made two free throws, then scored a break-away layup to give Clarion its first lead of the second half, 82-81. Shepherd went in front 84-82, but
Larry Johnson Jr.'s layup tied the game at 84. Shepherd's Marcus Adkison hit a deep three for an 87-84 lead, but Clarion came right down the floor and saw Anthony respond with a three of his own to tie the game at 87 with only 21-seconds left.
Shepherd put the ball in the hands of Adkison for the last shot, which was missed, but Muhammad was there for the tip-in to win the game.
Clarion's Andre Anthony scored 24 points with 6 assists and 3 steals, while
BJ Andrews had 20 tallies and
Rob Agurs also scored 20 points with 7 rebounds.
Akeem Williams chipped in with 10 rebounds and
Larry Johnson had 6 points and 8 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles shot 32 of 64 from the floor (50%), and 16 of 25 from the foul line (64%). The Eagles outrebounded Shepherd 41-34.
Shepherd was led by Ryan McTavish who had 24 points, while Marcus Adkison had 20 and Steffan Davis 18.
