PEPPER PIKE, OHIO – Four Golden Eagles finished the game in double-digits in scoring, including a double-double from
Tania Holmes, but the Clarion women's basketball team fell on the road to Ursuline by an 89-69 score on Wednesday. With the loss the Golden Eagles fall to 5-9 overall on the season.
Delrika Jones-Carey scored a team-high 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field while also recording nine rebounds in 33 minutes of play. Holmes, who is on the verge of becoming the next member of the 1,000-Point club at Clarion, notched a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds to go with five assists and two steals.
Tyra Polite and
Jordan Bekelja added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Cold shooting plagued Clarion against the Arrows in the first half, as the Golden Eagles shot just 31.7 percent in the first 20 minutes of action. Things improved markedly from there, though, with Clarion shooting 48.4 percent in the second half. Ursuline went 52.3 percent from the field and 60.0 percent from three-point range. The Golden Eagles won the rebounding battle with a 40-31 advantage on the glass.
Clarion briefly held the lead over the Arrows in the first quarter, with Jones-Carey tying the game at 12-12 on a jumper with 3:01 remaining in the period. Bekelja pushed her team over the top on the next offensive possession, taking a feed from Holmes and drilling a three-pointer to make it 15-12 with 2:31 to go in the period. The Arrows responded by tying it on a three from Camryn Hill and Ursuline ended the first quarter on a 14-0 run to take a 26-15 lead.
Jones-Carey cut the Ursuline lead to single-digits with a jumper early in the second quarter, and Jones-Carey added another with 5:46 to play to make it just 28-21. The Arrows outscored the Golden Eagles by eight points the rest of the way, though, and held a 43-28 lead at halftime.
The closest the Golden Eagles came the rest of the game was at the 7:24 mark of the third quarter when Bekelja knocked down another trey to cut it to 45-34. Ursuline controlled the action the rest of the way and took the game by an 89-69 final score.
