MEN'S BASKETBALL LOOKS AT MUST WIN SITUATION SATURDAY AT MERCYHURST

Basketball (Men's) | 2/13/2015 3:35:00 PM

ERIE, Pa. - Clinging to playoff hopes, the Clarion University men's basketball team finds itself in a must-win situation when it travels to Erie to take on Mercyhurst at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Golden Eagles (8-13 overall, 6-12) need to most likely win their last four PSAC West games (Mercyhurst, Edinboro, Slippery Rock and IUP) and get some help if they want to make the PSAC postseason for the first time since 2010. Clarion trails California (Pa.) by 2 ½ games, 2 in the loss column, for the sixth and final playoff berth awarded to the PSAC. The Vulcans have only three PSAC West contests left, and are on their conference bye this weekend playing a non-conference game with Davis & Elkins.

Mercyhurst (17-7, 14-5), meanwhile, still has eyes on the PSAC West title. The Lakers sit in third place, a game back of first-place Gannon and a ½ game behind second-place IUP with three conference games remaining including Saturday.

The game can be heard locally on 91.7 FM and on the internet here. Live stats are available here, and game notes can be read here.

Clarion is coming off a tough 78-71 loss at home to Gannon Wednesday despite a career-high 30 points from BJ Andrews.

Andrews, a sophomore guard, has exploded recently scoring at least 20 points in his last three games including a 29-point performance against Seton Hill Feb. 4 and the 30-point game Wednesday, and in his last five games he has scored 110 points, 22 per game. On the year, Andrews has climbed into the Top 20 in the PSAC in scoring at 20th averaging 13.3 points per game.

As a team, Clarion ranks in the middle of the pack, 11th, in the 18-team PSAC in scoring averaging 71.6 points per contest.

Mercyhurst is 16th in the conference in scoring at 65.5 points per game, but the Lakers rank third in scoring defense allowing just 61.5 points per contest compared to Clarion, which is 15th in the conference allowing 76.2 points per game.

The Lakers are led by Damon Jones (10.5 ppg) and Gerrae Wiliams (10.3 ppg).

Darius Stevens adds 12.2 ppg and Kyheim Hall 11.6 ppg for Clarion, which also ranks second in the PSAC in steals with 11.29 per game.

After Saturday, Clarion has three straight homes games. The Golden Eagles will host Penn St.-DuBois in a non-conference contest at 7 p.m. Monday then take on Edinboro at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday before facing Slippery Rock on Senior Day at 3 p.m. Sunday Feb. 22.
