CLARION, Pa. –
Kyheim Hall's two free with 32.5 seconds left capped a game-ending 10-2 run that lifted the Clarion University men's basketball team to a 72-70 win over visiting Slippery Rock Sunday afternoon at Tippin Gym.
Hall's charity shots helped end a 15-points, 10-rebound game for the junior, who recorded his sixth double-double of the year and his second against Slippery Rock this season.
BJ Andrews led Clarion with 24 points, his sixth 20-point game in the last nine, while adding three steals and three rebounds.
Rob Agurs chipped in with 12 points, a season-high five steals, four assists and four rebounds.
Chaquille Pratt led Slippery Rock with 27 points and 12 rebounds, while Antonio Butler added 18 points, five rebounds and four steals.
Clarion (10-15 overall, 7-14 PSAC West), who locked up a winning season at home on Senior Day, trailed 68-62 following a free throw by Slippery Rock's Desma Nicholson with 4:55 to play following a technical foul on the Golden Eagle bench. That charity shot, Nicholson missed the second one, came after a wild sequence of events following an old-school 3-point play by Agurs that gave the Golden Eagles a 62-61 lead with 6:08 to play.
At the 5:56 mark, Clarion looked like it had forced a Slippery Rock turnover, but The Rock (18-9, 13-8) was instead granted a timeout to the chagrin of Clarion head coach
Marcess Williams. After the timeout, Nicholson buried a 3-pointer to put Slippery Rock up 64-62, and on the play Hall was whistled for a foul while attempting to rebound a potential miss. That led to Chaquille Pratt hitting one of two free throws to make it a 65-62 Slippery Rock lead. Pratt missed the second one but got his own rebound followed by a layup to make it a 67-62 lead and a six-point Rock possession. After
Justin Grant missed a shot at the other end, the Clarion bench was called for the technical foul, and Nicholson connected on one of two free throws to push the lead to six.
But Clarion responded. Free throws by Agurs and Andrews got the deficit down to two, 68-66, with 3:57 to play. Pratt then pushed it back to four, 70-66, on a layup at 3:13, but an Agurs jumper followed by free throws by Hal and Andrews tied the game at 70 with 1:25 left.
The Golden Eagle defense then forced a shot-clock violation, and Hall was fouled by Frank Holloway on his way to the basket. The junior calmly sank both charity shots to put Clarion up 72-70.
Slippery Rock then called timeout with 10.6 seconds left, and Butler missed a jumper. The rebound was fought for an eventually went out of bounds off a Clarion player with 0.7 of a second left. Slippery Rock then got a good look from the far corner on what would have been a game-winning 3-pointer by Nicholson. But the shot was just a little strong.
Clarion returns to action with its season finale at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at IUP.
NOTES – Clarion honored its lone senior,
Tyrone McFadden before the game. McFadden has played three years for the Golden Eagles and has scored 105 career points to go with 67 rebounds and 23 assists.
