Game Recap: Basketball (Men's) |

ANDREWS' 29 POINTS; HUGE SECOND HALF KEYS MBB WIN OVER SETON HILL

CLARION, Pa. – BJ Andrews scored a career-high 29 points, and the Clarion University men's basketball team used a huge second half to down visiting Seton Hill 72-58 Wednesday night at Tippin Gym.

Andrews hit 8 of 14 shots from the field while nailing a career-best six 3-pointers and going 7 of 9 from the free-throw line. Andrews, who scored 19 of his points in the second half helping the Golden Eagles (8-11 overall, 6-10 PSAC West) outscored Seton Hill (6-15, 5-12) 41-19 in the half, added six rebounds, two steals and an assist.

"BJ was consistent all night," Clarion head coach Marcess Williams said. "He was shooting the ball well. In the second half, we ran several sets for him to get him some looks. He just played well tonight."

Andrews keyed a game-changing 23-5 second-half run for the Golden Eagles starting the run with a 4-point play when he nailed a triple off a Cameron Grumley pass, was fouled and made the free throws. That play, with 15:43 left came with Clarion trailing 44-37. By the time the run was over at the 8:06 mark, the Golden Eagles had a 60-49 lead, and Andrews had 10 of the 23 points hitting two more threes during the spurt.

"We started finishing," Williams said of the second-half run. "We started making shots, we were aggressive on the boards and we were able to get into our pressure and change up our pressure."

Clarion, which trailed by as many as eight, 41-33, early in the second half after being down eight, 39-31, at halftime, allowed just 10 points to Seton Hill in the game's final 14:17 allowing the Griffins to make just four baskets. Seton Hill went without a field goal from the 14:17 mark to the 7:55 mark, as Clarion went from down four, 48-44, to up by the 11.

Darius Stevens had his third double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Goldn Eagles, who also got 12 points off the bench from freshman point guard Cameron Grumley, who added five rebounds, a career-high five assists, a steal and two more blocks giving him five blocks in his last two games. Kyheim Hall, who didn't play in the first half, came off the bench to add six points and eight rebounds in the game's final 16 minutes.

Seton Hill got 14 points from David Windsor, 13 points and six rebounds from Noah Davis and 11 points from Zach Herman, who also had three assists. Spencer Cason added seven points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots, and Nebojsa had 11 rebounds, four points and two blocks.

Clarion was able to get the victory despite struggling early on from the field. The Golden Eagles missed their first nine shots and were just 2 of 16 from the floor in the game's first seven minutes. But a strong defensive effort kept Clarion in the game, and Seton Hill was never able to lead by more than 11, 37-26, in the opening 20 minutes.

The Golden Eagles return to action at 3 p.m. Saturday when they travel to California (Pa.). The game time was changed from 5 p.m. to 3 p.m. earlier Wednesday and will be just a single game at Cal instead of the traditional men's and women's doubleheader. The women's team will play at Cal at 1 p.m. Sunday.

NOTES – Andrews' previous high in points was 23 vs. IUP Jan. 24, and his previous high in 3-pointers was three, which he accomplished three times last vs. IUP on the Jan. 24 … Stevens' 12 rebounds ties his season and career high. He had 12 vs. Georgian Court Nov. 15 … The win coupled with a California loss to IUP  and an Edinboro loss to Gannon puts the Golden Eagles just a game back in the loss column of the Vulcans, Fighting Scots and Pitt-Johnstown for a PSAC playoff berth with six conference games remaining. Clarion hasn't made the PSAC postseason since 2010.
