CLARION, Pa. –
Tania Holmes scored 21 points and
Delrika Jones-Carey had another double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, but Seton Hill pulled away from Clarion in the second half to get a 73-63 win over the Golden Eagles Wednesday night at Tippin Gym.
For Holmes, it was her eighth 20-point game of the season and her third in her past seven games. For Jones-Carey, it was her fifth of the season tying her for the seveth-most double-doubles by a sophomore in school history with Courtney Willman in 2001. .
Jen Straw added a career-high 10 points to go with a career-best five assists while tying her career high with three blocked shots. She also added six rebounds and a steal for the Golden Eagles (2-19 overall, 1-15 PSAC West).
Mariah Wells led five Seton Hill players in doule digits with 14 points. Meghan Mastroianni added 12 points, Chelsea Apke had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and Kelly Brennan 10 points for the Griffins (9-13, 6-11).
Clarion had a 39-35 lead following a Holmes layup with 17:14 left, the Golden Eagles were still up one, 48-47, after a pair of
Leslie Hoye free throws with 12:35 to play and the game was tied at 51 with 10:19 to go after two Holmes free throws. But Seton Hill went on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to take a 58-51 lead with just over eight minutes left.
The Golden Eagles closed back within five twice, the last being at 60-55 on a Jones-Carey jumper with 4:52 left, but an 11-2 Seton Hill run put the game away.
Clarion started quickly jumping to an 11-4 lead four minutes into the game and led for most of the first half before Seton Hill went up one, 33-32, at halftime.
The Golden Eagles returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday at California (Pa.). The game was originally slated for 3 p.m. Saturday but was moved to Sunday to accommodate Cal's team so it could attend the funeral of a teammate who died in January.
