BOYD NETS SEASON HIGH 16 POINTS IN WBB LOSS AT CALIFORNIA SUNDAY

CALIFORNIA, Pa. - Despite a season-high 16 points from Jasmine Boyd, the Clarion University women's basketball team fell 76-53 at California (Pa.) Sunday afternoon.

Boyd was one of four Golden Eagles to reach double figures, and she added six rebounds, a season-high two blocked shots, a steal and an assist while coming up a point shy of her career-high in scoring, which is 17 set at Pitt-Johnstown Feb. 5, 2014.

Delrika Jones-Carey added 14 points and four rebounds for Clarion (2-20 overall, 1-16 PSAC West), while Jen Straw had a career-best 11 tallies, the second consecutive game she has set a career high in points in, and Tania Holmes tallied 10 points, six rebounds four assists and two steals. Straw added five boards.

California (19-3, 16-2), the first-place team in the PSAC West, though, also had four players reach double figures.

Kaitlynn Fratz led the Vulcans with a game-high 23 points, Micki Glenn added 17, Emma Mahady had 11 and Seairra Barrett 10. Barrett also chipped in four rebounds, while Mahady had six assists and two blocks and Glenn five helpers. Fratz had three steals.

Cal put the game away in the first half taking a 47-23 lead at the break thanks to a 58.1 percent shooting effort in the half (18 of 31). The Vulcans cooled down considerably in the second half connecting on just 9 of 23 shots (39.1 percent), while Clarion, which shot 36.7 percent in the opening 20 minutes, heated up after halftime hitting 13 of 26 shots from the field.

But despite the better second half, Clarion was never able to get closer than 16, 55-39 with 13:40 to play, in the half.

After a solid start by the Golden Eagles, who led 7-5 1:40 into the game, Cal used a an 8-0 run to take a 13-7 lead into the first media timeout. Clarion then got back to within four, 15-11, on a Straw layup with about 12 ½ minutes left in the half, but a 13-4 run allowed the Vulcans to build a 28-15 lead with just over eight minutes to go before the break.

The Golden Eagles got back within single digits one last time, 30-21, on a Boyd layup with 6:27 to play in the half. Cal, however, ended the half on a 17-2 run to all but put the game away.

Clarion returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts Gannon.
