TRESSLER, WILCOX STRONG DAYS NOT ENOUGH AS SOFTBALL FALLS TO IUP IN WEST ACTION

INDIANA, Pa. - Despite a pair of four-hit days from Christina Tressler and Casey Wilcox, the Clarion University softball team was swept in a PSAC West doubleheader at IUP Wednesday.

Tressler was 4-for-7 in the twin bill with a pair of doubles and an RBI, while Wilcox was 4-for-8 with two doubles and an RBI, but Clarion dropped game one 8-4 then lost game two 11-2 in five innings to the Crimson Hawks.

In all, four Golden Eagles had two hits in the game-one loss with Tressler going 2-for-4 including an RBI double in the third that gave Clarion a 2-0 lead, Wilcox was 2-for-4, Megan Anderson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Shawnna Crago was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI single in the fourth that put the Golden Eagles ahead 3-1. Carra Stevens added a double and run scored.

IUP used a three-run fifth and a four-run sixth to overcome the mid-game deficit.

Crago took the loss going 4 ? innings in the circle allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four. Chelsea Zola finished up allowing four runs in 1 ? innings on three hits and two walks.

Game two also started well for Clarion with the Golden Eagles jumping up 2-0 in the top of the first thanks to a Wilcox RBI double and a wild pitch.

Wilcox finished the second game 2-for-3 with the double, a run scored and an RBI, while Tressler was 2-for-3 with a double. But Clarion had just one other hit in the contest, a single by Stevens.

Meanwhile, IUP scored three in the first, two each in the second and third and then put up four in the fourth to go ahead by the eight runs needed to stop the game if Clarion didn't score in the fifth, which it didn't.

Sarah Gossard took the loss giving up three runs, all earned, on two hits and a walk in ? of an inning. Paige Baker then gave up four runs, on four hits and two walks while striking out one. Zola allowed six hits and four walks and was charged with four runs in 1 ? innings of work, and Lyndsey Jones retired the only hitter she faced.

The two hits in each game by Wilcox give her a five-game hitting streak, a streak that has seen her record two hits in each game while going a combined 10 of 17 (.588). She now has seven multiple-hit games on the year, with all seven coming in her last nine games. She is hitting a team-best .432 on the season.

Tressler's two multiple-hit contests give her six such games on the year, and she is hitting .348, while Stevens, a freshman, has now hit safely in three straight to raise her average to .320 on the year.

Clarion is back in action Saturday at Slippery Rock.
